Almost time for a set. My 08 G35 has 225/55/17's. I was going to go with some 50's but I think I will try to keep the ride as good as I can so I think 245/55's might be to much so 235/55's. I'm in SoCal so ice and snow isn't a factor but I won't rule out a good A/S tire.

I put Bridgestone Turanza Serenity on our last car (Maxima) and find them to be quiet, smooth and durable. This is what will go on our 'new' car when it needs tires. Worth a look.

Shop Tire Rack and tires-easy.com for price and selection. TE has a great deal on Kumho KH17's in the 235/55 size.

Why do you want to change sizes?

If you have the clearance, 245/50R17 would match the original OD better than 235/55R17 would.

Are you ever going to want to use chains or cables? I think you are not planning to drive over the mountains in winter, so I guess not. Thus you could use the wider tire if you want.

Use a tire calculator to see the effects.

Anything much wider than a 225 would be too wide for that weight class with a stock suspension - the suspension arm and strut compliance make the tire heel over and it will only corner on the outer 1/3 of the width. You could also end up with dartyness if everything is not set up just right.

I've had very good luck with 50 series FALKEN ive bought through discount tire direct and at very low price with free shipping. Only caution: they actually measured more like a 40 series though -

And much bigger would also have an effect on the stock brakes also, right? 235/55's gives it a bit better stance look and keeps the ride good with 55's vs 50's. That what I'm thinking. Couple I've looked at were Mich pilot Sport A/S Plus and Conti Extreme Contact DWS. Couldn't find any summer tires that looked as good as these specs.
When I went from 55's to 50's on my Altima I did notice the ride difference.

My advice, spend some time on Tire Rack researching the tires including price, for your current size tire. As for plus sizing, Discount Tire site has an easy to navagate plus sizing listing after you enter your car info on the site.

You can google some site for like miata site for differences in size and speedo difference.

Also get pricing including shipping from Treadepot and Disc. Tire Direct.

Seems to be many Discount/Americas Tire in SoCal. Go to a store with price info including shipping, and see if they will match or beat. Disc.Tire Direct online also will do the same if you have no store nearby.

It's a little work, but pays off with price/tire satisfaction, IMO.

Edit. Also currently a $70 rebate at DT on set of 4 Michelin Tires.

Bigger diameter is harder on stock brakes. 235/55s have a bigger diameter than your OEM tires. 245/50s have about the same diameter as your OEM tires.

I suspected you were looking for an appearance thing.

Regarding the suspension downside of going to 245 vs 225, I don't know.

shokhead,

Do you care if they are directional or not? If not, then BFGoodrich g-Force Sport seem to be a good summer tire from TireRack. Michelin Pilot Sport A/S Plus is another option, albeit all-season, & are quite a bit more expensive.

OK. Now I'm not sure. 235/55R17 or 245/50R17. The 235 would be .40 wider and the 245 would be .79 wider. I'm wondering about rubbing when tires are turned and hitting a dip.

According to DT website, +0 sizes are, 235/55-17 and 245/50-17. I doubt either would have clearance issues.

My previous set of tires on my 03 Altima, I went from 205/65-16 to 225/60-16 with no issues.

245/50R17 are somewhat limited in choice's of a good tire. When looking I keep coming back to Conti's extreme contact DWS. Having seen a tire that compares to that in a summer tire yet.

Youre right about the size being close, BUT 245-50-17 is a really rare tire. there are only a few tires in this size. My folks had to buy TWO sets for their Acura RL, and found out the hard way.

At ANY price, you'll be surprised how much you like these...

The Yokohama TRZ, and H4-S are both excellent tires at a good price. In that size, the sky is the limit.

Also, Wider tires would look nice, BUT, I've always found that on a given rim, a wider tire may provide more grip at the limit, but wont be as crisp on turn-in as the OEM width.

A wider tire has more room to distort under load unless the rim width increases.

Only make moderate changes to tire dimensions. Don't change revs/mile by more than 2% if you can possibly help it.

Running tires that are a little wide on the rim will also make the car squish and squash the sidewalls on hard cornering.

I can vouch for the caliber of the ContiExtremeContact/Extreme Contact DWS. It is a great tire. It wears a little fast, and at the limits of performance the sidewalls are kind of soft, but other than that, it's great.

Think I'll just go one size bigger at 235/55R17. Overall Diameter is only .33 more and Sidewall Height is .21 more .40 more Width. A bit more tire but not that much and the speed o will be 1 mph slower. Been looking at the ContiExtremeContact DWS or the Pirelli Pzero nero a/s or the Yokohama AVID H4s so far.

If you have a Sams club membership, they are installing BFG or Michelin tires for free until the 3rd of February I think. They usually charge $15 per corner, so that would save 60 off a set of decent tires.

If I were ready to put my all season tires back on, I would go for it, but its still winter here
