My new schedule leaves me with a lot of cold starts and I am beginning to worry about startup wear. My Schedule:
Take wife to work 5:30am - Cold start #1
Take son to school at 8:40am - Cold start #2 -
Pickup wife from work, got to work myself @ 1pm - CS #3,
Go home from work 10PM CS#4

Is there anything I can add to my ASL to help with startup wear? I put 36K miles a year on my cars, and this one has to last the 6 year loan. this car needs to last.

If you drive it carefully until it's warm then you won't have a problem. What you're doing there isn't even considered abuse, people who abuse their cars still get 6+ years and at least 100k miles before problems develop. The care we take today is what is going to take most of cars well beyond 250k miles.

My wifes schedule for our car is;

05:30am leave house 1/2 mile to kick boxing
06:15am done with kick boxing come home
07:15am take kid to school 2.5 miles one way
03:30pm go get kid from school 2.5 m
05:00pm take kid to lesson 2 miles.
05:35pm come back home.

Some days she may not have to take the kids to their lessons but most days she does. She may also go shopping which is less than 3 miles one way durning the day.

2 days a week she goes to work, 15 miles one way. 10 miles of that 75mph freeway.

I'm not worried about startup wear. My UOAs show low to no wear. (thats on a new engine still breaking in)

Our engines last as long as we want them to.

And she does not wait to drive off. She starts it and less than 15 secs off she goes.

You are worrying about something that is not worrying about. You can't add something to oil that will beat the thermal expansion of the metals. What makes you worry all of the sudden about startup wear?

I suppose you could add the Amsoil Pre-Oiler.

Started to worry as my cold starts more than doubled. And the fact that reading up on the subject most people say the most wear happens at startup. My car will have 240K miles or more before I'll be free of the loan and can afford a new one. I can't afford it to wear itself out.

The oil is technically not cold even after sitting for 2 hours. I know my eninge oil stays pretty warm for 4-5 hours. Just working, going to lunch, working, and then driving home is fine on oil.

I have not gotten under the car to feel the oil pan several hours later but I know before I put my bike in the shed I let it sit out for a couple hours to cool down and when I put my hand on the clutch housing (assume is what is called, is where I pour in the oil) it is still pretty warm to the touch.

Those small AVEO engines are pretty durable.

Worried about cold starts in September Pennsylvania with Amsoil?

I've read prior poster comments here - about these AVEOs going beyond 200K with thicker, cheaper oil than what you're using.

You need to quit biting your nails....lol

The huge percentage of your miles are after a warm up. I don't see a problem.

If you need something to worry about you can have some of my problems...

Still won't help the thermal expansion part.

What have you been reading?

No, ASL is great oil you're good to go.

You really have nothing to worry about....as trip7 said, those Aveo engines are as tough as nails. ASL does have esters in its base oil, which help with oil cling, and ASL is a 5w30 oil, which is good down to at least -30C...and you're not going to see even close to that temp in Penn.

Put it in perspective...I, and many other Canadians, run 5w30 dino in our winters, where weeks of -20C all day and night are not uncommon, and I never worry about wear that will shorten the life of my engine, even with tons of cold starts......

Your car will last longer than you want it to, guaranteed!

I agree with the others, your oil isn't even cold after all that unless you live in Yukon or something.
I suppose you could look into a pre-oiler, but I wouldn't worry about it.

With all those short trips the thing you SHOULD worry about is your exhaust system, even if it's stainless.
Not much you can do about it though.

I wouldn't worry about the oil/engine though.

In what I have looked into and like another has said here, there's little that can be done about the fitting of part related to thermal expansion. No, don't go there.

From what I read in your schedule, there really only seems to be one true "cold" start, so let that relieve some anxiety.

Lastly, it's inevitable that things wear out, even when you think you're doing something a favor by doing nothing at all! Try to relax and enjoy the way things are operating so harmoniously (so I hope). Just keep -up with routine maintenance and mind the road/traffic. Ponder what you might like for your next vehicle if you need further help getting your mind off this topic.

Take care and happy motoring!
