Getting in shape

A combo of weights and cardio. Eating is the big thing. Cut back on portion size and eat more meat and less sugar/simple carbs.

Good to eat 4-6 small meals than 2-3 bigger ones. Keeps blood sugar more even.

That is a BIG feat and I congratulate you. I disagree with you on introducing carbs in your diet though. I use the analogy of a coke addict quitting coke but then introducing it to his diet in lower levels. Sooner or later it will come back to bite you. Temptation is the devil you don't want to [censored] off. What you don't know will never come back to haunt you. I wish the OP all the best.

I always hear thats one of the best things to do but if you have a hectic schedule that could be a hard thing to do...Some days you barely have time for quick bite.

Long light repetitious stuff like treadmills, jogging are OK.
But it takes incredible amounts of miles to work off a pound. Great for the cardiovascular system, though.
What you want is to build muscle with heavier weights.
This burns fat pretty quickly, but has the advantage that resting muscle burn calories even when you sleep! More muscle=more free calorie burning.

Don't go completely by weight - when you work out your muscles and bones get bigger.

It is crucial and essential that you supplement with minerals, and possibly vitamins.
Eat healthy. It is unpleasant for a little while, then you will actually naturally dislike cruddy food.
Many common American foods are loaded with calories. This equates to a day of working out for some ridiculous hamburger, fries and shake meal.

Check out a body building site such as this one http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/index.html . There's a thread in the photo section of the forum with people showing their progress going from fat to fit. It will give you motivation.

You're going to have to skip the fatty meat for a while. Maybe eat it for a cheat meal or two a week.

I've only seen chicken breast and green veggies for 5 nights every week for the last three months. It gets old but seeing the pounds drop off is encouraging. With only diet and some light strength training, I've lost 26 pounds in 3 months. Not a lot but considering I do little cardio, I'm satisfied. About 35 more and I will reach my goal.

With some will power, you can do it.

In this case I have to give you credit for losing all that weight and most important keeping it off...My brother went from 160 to 250 and has no will power to get the weight off...Even after telling him about how he could get diabetes plus all the other issues it just falls in deaf ears

Is he under a lot of stress or is depressed ?
Some people are emotional eaters and don't even realize it.

I appreciate all the info, I started using the weights and riding the bike every other day. In addition I cut the carb intake and increased meat intake instead. I also cut all regular carbs to whole grain complex carbs if I do eat some. And I am drinking a ton of water each day.

Don'texpect to much to soon. I don't go by the numbers. Weight wise I've lost 12 lbs. in 18 months but the fat has turned to muscle. Over all it's been 75lbs. from when it all started. The machines I started on with a couple of plates I max out now. You'll feel like anew person.

Yes...He made some extremely bad investments.

Run Forest! RUN!

Seriously, after about a 6 year lapse, at least, I got back into running this summer. Currently running about 40 miles per week and slowly adding more miles. Running my first half marathon this weekend and am planning on my first full at the end of Feb. Lost 60 lbs so far. Still eat fast food maybe once a week. Otherwise it's just been portion control, total calorie intake, and running. No low carb, no carb, low fat whatever. Weight loss is calories burned > calories consumed, keeping in mind a rough estimate of your basal metabolic rate.

I just do it your way...Portion control is prabably the most important thing.

Brian has a point, if you physically can run, run.
Something nobody has mentioned yet is buying a heavy bag punching it. First, you might want to learn 3 or 4 basic punches, and if you entertain MMA fantasies, maybe a front kick and a roundhouse kick, then just beat on the bag from 3 minutes, with a minute of rest between them. Do it right, it's an excellent workout for your cardio, as well as strength, plus you get to hit something.

As long as you don't have a prohibitive injury, it's really easy to get into running at almost any stage of your life. I know there are other routes to fitness. But don't overlook running just b/c you don't think you'd ever be able to. I'd recommend checking out books by John "the penguin" Bingham such as "No Need for Speed," "The Courage to Start," or "Running for Mortals."

Ive heard that to be a very good thing to do. A father of folks I went to HS with lost well over 100# doing that.

But is it hard on your joints and bones if doing it right and hard?

If you're doing the punches and kicks in a mechanically and anatomically sound way, you're fine. The trick is to make sure you are. Many, many people think they know how to do such things and in fact they end up damaging their joints.
After that, you should learn to wrap your hands or get a pair of bag/wrap gloves.
If you can do 5 rounds day, and just do 3 or 4 days a week, you'll be surprised at how your fitness improves.

I will share my recent experience.
Moderate workouts and slightly less consumption will let you drop weight pretty quickly.
I have lost forty pounds in the past year, with little serious effort.
If you eat a little less each day, you will soon not want to eat as much, and you will lose weight.
Once you are on a losing trend, you will experience ketosis, in which state you are actually burning fat, not mussle tissue.
You will know when this happens by the very distictive scent of your urine.
Eat what you like, just eat less of it. Do this for a week or so, and you will start dropping pounds, and you won't feel hungry.
For me, I am now a little below 170, less than I have weighed in the past ten years. My blood preasure is good unmedicated, and all the little joint and foot pains have gone away.
One factor may be your history. I think that if you were ever really athletic, it is easier years later to get back into shape.
Also, it seems to be much easier for men than it is for women.
