Germany To Buy US-Made F-35s

Interesting choice.

Nuclear capability was an important selection criterion. Germany has had a nuclear deterrent mission since the Cold War - to counter Russia.

Their choices included the F/A-18 E/F and the F-35.

While I’m not an F-35 fan (cost over-runs, modest performance) the combination of stealth and nuclear capability seem particularly valuable given current world events.

Putin did in 24hrs what the US could not since 1977: make Germany increase its defense budget.
Not only are they going to spend $40 billion more than Russians this year, but the decision to buy F35 was so quick that only German efficiency can do that. This means they had all these options ready; just in case.

That's great news for Germany . Now is any country going to do anything against that but . I've lost faith in all governments at this point . What happens when it's in your backyard? Who do you call then?

Against who? Putin. Arming UKR is as much as we could do (and we are doing it well). Everything else is playing with a real fire. As much as we have a moral obligation to help UKR, we have also a moral obligation to not get the world into a nuclear conflict.

As much as it sucks yeah. Sitting here watching the news roll in. Proud of Ukraine for fighting back as well as they are, but frustrating we can do nothing but send weapons and money.

I meant to say nut not "but" . So what is going on is he can keep marching and conquering as long as he's threatening nuclear , nobody can do anything ?

Astro, do you think the F-14 "could have" kept up or performed better than today's F-22 & F-35? Would they be able to be outfitted to carry nuclear weapons/missiles and perform as well or better than a nuclear compatible F-22 & F-35?

I miss Garmisch. I miss Rothenburg! I used to hop on the A7 and let the V12 sing all the way down.

Gorgeous country.
My mother's family is from Kitzingen, Germany. I was able to visit there twice, age 6 and 14. My dad was stationed there 1958-1961 and brought her back to the US (Married, of course).
My Uncle Jurgen and his family are still there. It's a very beautiful country.

I spent a week and a half in the Osnabrück area last fall visiting friends and I had a great time, it really is beautiful and the food is excellent. I'm really missing the great bread right about now. Next time I get back over there need to see more of the country. Also want to see Italy.

They have EF Typoons that are German aircraft that I think are a superior platform in about every way I can think of aside from the aspects of partial stealth and nuclear armaments.

Good on them.
Though with the glacial pace of modern acquisition programs it may be a decade though before those ships sit on the tarmac.

Reminds me of Canada’s acquisition of the F-18. It started in 1978, and the decision was made and first delivery was 1982 Luckily the F-18 was new back then. The planes are 40 years old now and I’m amazed they are still making a variant of it. You plane experts jump in but I read that the current F-18 is less than half the price of the F-35. For smaller counties it’s difficult to make a case for the latest and greatest since the majority of the planes will most likely not see combat. As long as they can shoot down a Russian bomber.

Yes Germany should build up a strong military so they can fend for themselves. What could possibly go wrong?

The nuclear bombs in Germany are owned and controlled by the US. Upgrades to those bombs require new electronics in the plane which are presently only built in the F-35.
