Generation Bashing

Well this latest generation coming of age has grown up with cell phones and smart phones and social media and the whole "LOOK AT MEEEEEEEE!!!!!" factor is several fold higher, because it is encouraged.

Sure each generation has criticized the newest generation, and will always do so, but there is a difference with this new one, as narcissism is encouraged, and the sense of entitlement never higher. A huge percentage of these hyper sensitve emotional freaks like to go around finding things which can offend them set off their indignation, and whine and cry and complain if they don't get their way.

Sure those types have always existed, but never in this number and not to anywhere near this degree.

Life is unfair, previous generations come to accept this, The current one revels in complaining about it, with foot stomping gleeful indignation, and a complete lack of Logic.

The *only* reason our generation created a forum is to complain how easy the next generation is going to have it. The other uses were entirely unanticipated. If you don't like that, go create something so you can use it complain in. Please stay out of our creation.

I'm sure it's people who are just frustrated with their lives and this is how they vent. Sometimes it happens to be about millennials.

I'm a millennial and I do not receive any bit of this bashing outside in the real world. Older generations are always nice to me so the ones I see on here are probably a minority of trolls with nothing better to do.

I've never really seen the point in taking pride in one's generation anyway. In my opinion it seems silly to take pride in something that other people did that you have no hand in.

Generation X is the best, lock thread.

I've heard the "millennial" bashing in my office too. As others have said it's a right of passage to talk about how you used to walk uphill to school both ways and the only form of communication was smoke signals. This generation doesn't do itself any favors by being a bunch of sissies...ya know, words "hurting" these days and all. 45 years ago it was the hippies..so on so forth.

Stop giving a rats behind what people think of you. If people have two brain cells to rub together they will judge you on your character and work ethic and not your "generation." Despite what looks cool or hip, hard work is what people worth anything will respect. Let your work and accomplishments do the speaking for you.

There will always be winners and losers. Decide which category you want to be in and go at it...not making a decision for one or the other is making a decision. In my short almost 30 years on this earth I've learned to ignore the naysayers, the negative, the victims. Write down what you want in life and spend the next 30 years clawing your way to get it. Forge your own path. Never associate with people who think the world is against them because they will keep you down. Only you know what you want and it's up to you to go get it.

I am 61. I'll tell you what the difference is. In 1968 when Nixon got elected or in 1980 when Reagan got elected or in 1992 when Clinton got elected you didn't see any of us crying inconsolably or having panic attacks and needing group hugs or coloring books or being so fearful for our future that we couldn't take our final exams. And we were a lot more knowledgeable out history and politics and didn't swallow talking points by either party hook line and sinker. We knew how to change a flat tire or replace a faulty light socket and didn't need velcro straps to tie our shoes. We were not a generation of mommy men who all got Participation Trophys, we had our self esteem hurt and took it like a man just like we took a dodge ball to the head.
Much of the current generation deserves scorn. Maybe not all their own fault as some have pointed out, but they seem to have lost the backbone to do something about it and instead look for safe spaces. Pitiful. Now get offa my lawn.

All generations suck, and im on the cusp of generations so dont really have one of my own (early 80s baby, I know records and rotary phones and real floppy disks, yet push technology better than any millenial; and are stuck paying for all).

The greatest generation destroyed the environment and the pension system that i am now paying.

The boomers were like locusts, and will bankrupt ss, medicare, etc, even as the salary I pay oasdi taxes on goes up by huge jumps.

Gen X is too soft to stand up to this, too spoled by the boomers and greatest generation giving handouts, and too dumb to be able to fix it.

The millenials are all wimps who cry over elections and not getting participation trophies, and think things should be handed out to them.

I don't like the idea of characterizing people by age any more than I do that of characterizing them by race, creed, color or national origin.
There are great people from every demographic and there are losers as well.
Every person is a unique individual and you owe it to them as well as yourself to judge them in that way.

What about when they have massive student loan debt? Then, most jobs want to hire them for part time hours so they don't have to buy them health care.

Many things are easier for millennials but there is always something to complain about. How about stagnant median incomes while education and housing prices skyrocketing? When you finally make it through college and land a real career job, you still have that giant student loan debt and today's strict lending standards to deal with.

If you started your career in the late 90s a home was half as much money and you earned nearly the same as today in the most common fields. You could get a no down payment mortgage loan easily.

I think things are overall easier today but also more competitive.

The one generation that I have the most respect and admiration for is known as the "Greatest Generation." I am so grateful that I grew up in their shadow and got to know many of them...they are the ones most responsible for all the good things we know today! Too bad that they couldn't have lived forever. The few survivors that I know today are an inspiration.

Agreed...

I think the major lesson here is that we shouldn't be over generalizing each other based on something as silly as generations.

These older generations are something to be modeled after? Like failing to raise children correctly and hence we have supposed horrible Millennials? Should we Millennials be this bitter to Generation Z (2000+)? I can certainly say you older generations are giving me inspiration not to be an old, bitter crustacean on an oil forum ranting about new generations.

dareo,

These young 'adults' have to pay off student loans just like other people have done. Unless you want to pay much higher taxes and laws passed to have student debt discharged through bankruptcy and others pay for their education.

Many millennials come up with lots of excuses.

As a millennial, I hear the most bashing about millennials. But guess who crashed the economy, sunk our nation in debt, made education unreasonably expensive, made healthcare unreasonably expensive etc? Yeah, wasn't the millennials. We're the ones stuck with it and trying to make it out.

As many people get old, they just get so grouchy and have to constantly complain about everything, like the neighbors car parked in front of their house, the neighbors grass is 2 inches too tall, kids these days and the music they listen to and the clothes they wear. Grow up, worry about yourself, and put a smile on your face.

Nick,

Older people get tired of Occupy Wall Street college age idiots with their Starbucks coffee, iPhones, designer clothes, etc... demanding things they feel they are entitled to. LOL

Same goes for the 'Fight for $15' crowd demanding money from employer. LOL

The real world doesn't work like that. You have to earn it... or it has to be given to you by rich parents that worked hard. Its very simple. I know you are not the idiot millennial mentioned above.

Yeah I don't support the $15 an hour thing either. I do think minimum wage should absolutely be raised to a reasonable level, but $15 is too high. Maybe $10-$11 an hour would be reasonable.

Starbucks is a total waste of money, and I don't like coffee too, I get a drink there once every 6 months at the most.
I do like my iPhone, but I paid for it myself, and I'm quite simple with my clothes.

I think the idiocy per generation is pretty equal. I have a lot of friends with a level head on their shoulders, and know a lot of people from high school who are as you describe. It's just the way it is, not everybody can be the same.

The older generations act like millennials are the only ones glued to phones yet it seems like everyone is. Look at demographics of Facebook. It ain't millennials......

My own bit of generation bashing - ironically, the boomers seem to be the loudest and most self-entitled ones; endlessly ranting about how successful their generation was, how they deserve EVERYTHING, and how us younger folk won't match their accomplishments...
Accomplishments, right. Accomplished being born with a silver spoon in the mouth. Growing up in the post-war economy in what was easily the greatest country in the world, making them (relatively speaking) the luckiest generation in history. But, if you ask them, they 'earned' it and we younger generations just have to work harder!

lulz.

Yep, we are all lucky to be born in the USA.

Very true. But there are some people in this world that are even luckier than that.

The problem is that these (older) people might say that, but they've made their way at the cost of staggering national debt, sustained underfunding of pensions, continued provision of handouts like SSI and medicare, that werent cared for properly and are bankrupt and insolvent (yet of course they will still get paid a check)...

And as irresponsible and treacherous as can be imagined, theyve dumped it all on their kids, setting it up for follow-on generations to have to pay for it long before those generations are evenable to vote.

I have litle sympathy for millenials... But its the legacy costs that the older generations have incurred and are causing, that have caused things like education, healthcare, etc to skyrocket, with their (millenials') debts to going up accordingly... And meanwhile the older folks arent vacatng jobs, so the opportunity is not necessarily there.

There's lots at fault of the younger folks too... Too much "I deserve"... Many living at a standard of living that took their parents decades to accomplish, while they are just years out of school... Because of living on credit with marginal income, etc. Too much "I deserve". Too much fanciness. But they were also handed a situation that they didnt create and cant yet legislate their way out of... by the irresponsibility of the older generations...
