General Altimax RT43

I have had several sets, and all have been extremely serviceable.
Shopping tires for the Accord, and these are on the list.
If offered a good deal, I'd have no hesitation with buying them again.

I've bought 16 to 20 of the things, I've lost track but they've been great in every way.

The OEM Conti's on my Passat are threatening to do 70k without trouble and they have been very good in snow as well.

I believe General has a new tire that I can't remember the name of now but it looks to be an upgraded RT43. Supposed to be better in winter, looked but I can't find it now.

I ordered a set of RT43's, along with some new wheels for the Prius last week. I've never used anything but Michelin ES so I'm hoping I don't take a big hit on MPGs, but we'll see when I get them next week.

Prius can be funny when changing tires. Some members on "Prius Chat" claim to get the same MPG when changing to a non-LRR tire and some claim to get horrible MPG when doing the same. Hmmm!

That's not funny at all.

LRR only means the tire has better RR compared to other tires with the same wear and traction characteristics. It does NOT mean Low Rolling Resistance!

So LRR tire might have good RR values or they might not! (This is an example of something that is very poorly named - like jumbo shrimp!)

I too am a fan of the RT43 and have used a few sets on my family’s vehicles but over the past three years, Continental has better offerings. If you time it right (rebates), you can get a premium Continental offering for only a few dollars more and occasionally less than the RT43.

For example, I’m shopping around for tires for my RAV4 Hybrid right now. Locally, I could get the RT43 for $143/tire or I could get the Continental Crosscontact LX25 for $141/tire after rebate.

Back when the RT43 was first released it was a huge savings to go for the RT43 over a more premium Continental or Michelin; I’m talking $250-400 in savings per set. But now even without rebates we are only talking about an $80-120 in savings per set.

So again, I’m a fan of the RT43s and I was an early adopter and advocate for them, but I feel that their time has come and gone and are no longer a price leader. A savvy consumer can have a quieter, smoother tire, with better handling and similar wear characteristics for the same money.
