guys, gotta 02 tacoma that calls for 75w90 gear oil for the diffys.. i want to go up to 75/140 not 75w110 (bc my local amsoil guy doesnt sell it and i wont pay for a case at one time) but the 75w140 is M1 or other synthetic gear lube. my question is i dont pull much just a bass boat once in a while and my driving is 80% highway.. going up to the 140wt, could i extend the oci to 50k miles? instead of book calling for 30k miles?? my amsoil dealer does have 75w90 severe gear which i am really thinking about and running it to 50k miles and change.. what do you guys think?

I don't think the 75W140 would hurt anything and the Mobil 1 is a good product. But if you like the Amsoil gear oils, the Severe Gear 75W90 would work great in your application.

Why can't your local dealer get you a few quarts of the 75W110? I bet Pablo or Gary could.

The book is for non syn oil I should hopefully have a Redline 80w/140 uoa comming with over 30,000 miles on the oil I sent the sample in last monday.

Why the heck your local dealer can't get 75W-110 is way beyond me.....

90 will work, but with the new spec, it's really on the light side.

110 is ideal

140 will work

Excuse me for asking, but what are the advantages at going outside of Spec on weight?

The Subaru guys are notorious for flipping out if you through anything but 75w90 in the front transmission\diff.

specs now a days are manipulated by gas mileage they are trying to target.. imo... i dont drive a subaru. heavier wts supposedly protect bettter, less shearing over time and etc.. i was curious if it would be a good fit or me

By recommending 75W-110 I'm NOT telling him to go "outside of Spec on weight"......75W-110 fits in the OLD 75W-90 range.

owners manual didnt specify. atleast not in mine.

To Pablo: Just curious with regards to the "OLD range" 75w-90 reference that you made. My 06 4Runner specs a 75/90 as well and as it was considered on the lighter end of the 90 factor, the Severe Gear 75W-90 was ideal for my location in the winter and offered the best fuel economy as well, so I have it in all orifices. Can I assume that model year 06 is in the new spec range or should I be running the 110?

Most car manufacturers have NOT accounted for the SAE change even in 2008. Technically you can use either if your rig calls for XW-90 - the 110 if you want a little better protection. 90 in your case, no problem.

given my oci for gear oil (per manual) states that i change it every 30k. with amsoil 75w110 or even M1 ( or any other syn gear lube) at 75w140 what kind of oci am i looking at? personally i want to go over 30k miles bc i drive that much in a year or more. i am looking more towards the 50k mile mark. my driving style is pulling a bass boat some but mainly its 85% highway and 15% city.

mikeg5,
I would go 50,000 miles with the Amsoil and do a drain along with a UOA. If it shows fine, extend to drains every two years. Since you're mostly highway, I'm sure that'd be very easy to do.

yeah i am going with either amsoil 75w90 or M1 (or other synthetic gear oil) in 75w140. i feel pretty confident that both can go 50k miles with ease in my situation
