D1G3 supercedes D1G2, if your manual only called for D1G2, then yes you can use up your existing D1G2 stock.
Just a guess here but dexos 1 grade 2 probably ties to API SN+. Grade 3 is probably updated to meet SP ratings. The ford spec updated about the same time and has been similarly slow to update.
D1G2 was rated all the way up to SP Resource Conserving for many oil brands and viscosities.
The nomenclature is D1G2 and D1G3, the D standing for Dexos and the G for Generation.
