In another thread on a different topic this morning, RedCorvette said that G-OIL has a shelf life of a year and that Customer Service advised someone of that on Slickdeals.

zeezee responded that it's just the additives that settle and to shake it up and it should be good for as long as any other oil.

What do you all know/think?

Additives do settle and any oil should be shaken/mixed when used. I expect the shelve life to be the same as amy other unopen oil or 5 years?

Do any oil bottles say "shake before use"?

It doesn't make sense to say in the same email that additives settle but then still say the shelf life is a year. If it were a case of just shaking, then the shelf life is longer.

Or maybe they are pushing usage and repurchase?

Why would they say to shake it? Only lunatics like us would buy enough oil to last more than a year.

That said, if the additives settle, the only concern is getting it off of the bottom of the bottle.

I think cow fat would mold after a year!

Anyone see that episode of CSI where the bugs were nom-noming on used g-oil?

Interesting. I have got several 5qt jugs in the garage so I will have to keep this in mind.

If you are concerned about the shelf life of any product, I suggest asking their customer service directly. Rumors tend to over-run fact on the internet.

As far as speculation goes... I would think as long as the product's seal has not been compromised, I don't see why motor oil would have anywhere near such a short shelf life.

G-Oil has always said it's longer than that -- perhaps the formula changed? I don't really see how a sealed bottle would go bad after a year...I bet lots of that stuff sits in warehouses for months at a time after it's produced.

I have to agree. I have plenty of 1-2 year old oil bottles in the garage. I find that some are extremely hard to mix after the additives have settled on the bottle.

I'd shake and shake before opening, pour 1/3rd of the bottle and find the bottom of the bottle still littered with stuck additives, which are a dark color (kinda looks like dirt on the bottom).

I'd have to shake it for quite some time to completely get all the stuff suspended.

I don't know how important it is to shake the oil bottles, esp if the additives have settled but i'd expect after all this time that someone should know.

Couldn't we send in a sample for analysis straight from the top of a bottle that sat for a while, and then shake it up really well and send in a second sample?

I'd expect the first sample should show LESS additives vs the second which was shaken and has all the proper amount of additives suspended in the oil...???

The source was someone who asked customer service directly.

I noticed you said that. Who was this someone? A message forum member, or was this something posted on their website? Sorry if I come off as confrontational, but I like details.

I'm sure it's longer than a year. What's the shelf life of actual packaged FOOD? Just for laughs, I just checked a jar of spaghetti sauce and its "best if used by" date is in January 2013. A bag of frozen chicken breasts expires next year, also.

I suspect that the plastic the bottle is made from will go bad and crack open before the oil that's in it does.

My brother, a chemical engineer, actually said that some oils could eat through the plastic bottles...though it's a very slow process, as you said.

And bear in mind I mentioned this in response to someone who has 42 quarts in their stash.

Sure enough. Thank you, RedCorvette. That just goes to show people they need to ask questions. Mobil 1 suggests five years for their oil; G-Oil, only one. A little bit of research will yield a 100% positive answer every time.
