funny rant about used car buyers

Not a lick of rust whatsoever. That car is clean IMO. Id drive that thing shame free and be proud of it.

He's right.. 9/10 car buyers check nothing besides the body panels.

*I would only complain to him about the paint if he was asking an extreme high side of what KBB recommends, but car shopping is a case by case thing. If the car had 50k, rough paint and was rust free, a higher side of KBB would be fair IMO.

Yea, no rust...i love buying stuff from the south. I get sick of the rust we get here in Indiana.

I bought a tow dolley from a dealer here in Maine who hauled rusty junk down South, I'd like to say South Carolina, to a buy-here-pay-here lot he or his buddy ran.

He bluntly told me that if you BHPH, you've made some mistakes in life. A prince among men.

This is the problem with buying used, he's probably asking KBB excellent condition for that old hooptee! Used cars are way overpriced, I either buy new or the very used cars that no one else wants that I can pick up for $2k or less.

A lot of used car sellers, both dealer and private party, are priced higher than appropriate. Just a few months ago when I was car shopping I dealt with this. Lots of people asking $5000 for a 12 year old civic with north of 200k miles.... insane.
Picked up a cheap well maintained Chevy in for $1500, not a dent or scratch on it either.

"You can find one that's been repainted. You'll pay for it."

Yep.

The shop next to me has a continuous supply of cars in for paint. (BTW: that is a "CarFax" sticker on the windshield of that one)

They are usually marked with labels of higher risk car loan lots. Those folks are already paying more because of their credit scores. They can tack on an extra $2,000 because their car will have shiny paint and no door dings.

Occasionally I will see a car there that has a fairly prominent European luxury car dealer's name on the sticker. To be fair, those cars are usually only getting a small area fixed. Scuffs on the bottom of the front fascia, parking lot ding...etc...

used car market, especially toyota/honda, is nuts. insane pricing, lots of odo scams, plenty of resellers who buy auctions, etc.
for that reason i bought a saturn for my boy, but it's clearly not par quality wise.

BTW, the saturn has a clearcoat failure too, just not as bad as the video. I was just repairing paint today, LOL!

Thanks for posting, sometimes I take it for granted how cheap we get cars down here in Texas. A few years ago I bought an 02' Saturn SL2 that had been hit in the front, needed core support, hood and a fender. Rest of the body was pretty good. unibody was tweaked very minor, but very fixable. Paid $700 for it. Also had a new motor that had been rebuilt 10k miles ago. Parts cost (and factory color match parts were available at the jy) was about $300. Problem was, fully fixed and running, the car was still only worth about $1500 on a perfect day. I needed the motor for another car, the interior for another one, and so on... so it was actually more financially feasible to part it rather than take the time to repair it and make a few hundred bucks.

With all the crazies around here....a good running beater is becoming a better and better idea...

Besides, for less than 500 bucks, one can make it shiny again...

I'm running into similar issues selling my 1991 Mercury Marquis. It runs perfectly and has always been rustproofed, but the rust on the outside (no perforation) puts people off. Until it sells, I'm happy putting more miles on it.

This summer, I'll probably sandblast the rust and repaint it for sale again. The OP is right, and I've seen this time and again - people buy paint jobs. They don't really care about the other 90% of the car.

why would you sell a 91 Marquis that run well? I am just curious since I know around here you wouldn't get much of anything for it. Maybe $800-900? I would keep it around as a backup or snow driving car or drive the wheels off of it.

The vanity of Americans. As long as it LOOKS good it must be worth a lot more that the ugly car of the same year make and model, doesn't matter if the pretty car has toasted rings, a shot head gasket, and a slipping trans.
I'll take an ugly car that's solid over a pretty piece of junk any day.
I test drove a 2008 cobalt, listed for $6k, looked good and a preliminary under the hood inspection was ok, but as soon as I took it out on the test drive I turned around and came right back after 1 block. One of the wheel bearings was toast. Gave the salesman back the keys and left. I can't believe they put all that time in to detailing it but never bothered to change the wheel bearing.
I suppose there's a lot of suckers out there.

I think Maaco paints cars for $500. Way way back, they used to do it for $100 but it's gone up a bit over the years. Anyway, can't relate, last couple of cars I bought were over 10k and the paint was fine.

Oh and the car is a POS. Not sure why he's mad at buyers, I think he must not disclose to them that the paint is shot so they take one look and leave. As a buyer, I'd be mad at the seller for not disclosing such as obvious defect. If he disclosed it, then only those who would consider buying a car with bad paint would show up.
