Fully charged AC at self serve junkyard

I've picked a few AC compressors at self serve junkyards. Always the AC system had been emptied and wasn't under pressure. Same as they drain the oil and coolant, you don't expect to be dealing with fluids.

I guess it was AC day at the junkyard today. I was there an hour and there were three distinct refrigerant releases in my area. I was pretty surprised. Doesn't seem legal to be sitting out cars without evacuating the AC. In fact, I'm surprised they don't sell used Freon like they do used coolant. You ever see this? It was new to me.

Sounds like you found an anything-goes junkyard! Cherish it, support it, before they get shut down.

I still have access to one with the magic passphrase, "I don't need a receipt."

Actually, this place is the least "anything goes" and most organized of the places I go to. They are run by a national chain and started writing the mileage on the windows and they have a good organized inventory and have the cars all sitting on concrete. They also tend to be pricier than the disorganized lots.

Some of the places have no inventory and lots of standing water if there are recent rains.

The chances of a dismantler knowing how to use a refrigerant recovery machine is slim to none, They usually just vent the refrigerant out of the prying eye of the public.

Far as retailing used refrigerant without getting into legality....Getting it into 12/16oz cans would be a process in it's own.
