Hyundai recommends replacing it only if there is a problem. They give you an access port under the rear seat, and an access hatch into the gas tank below that so you don't have to drop the fuel-tank, exhaust and 4WD drive shaft. Thought that was nice of them to give you such access "in case"

It also has a cheese-cloth type mesh over the inlet that helps keep the [censored] out of the filter making a filter change very very rare. So rare that the dealer has to order them in from Korea because they are never needed.

I have the technical drawing showing this...

stevie the same system you describe has a 75,000 km service interval down here. maybe we have more rusty tanks, but i doubt it...

In my owners manual it has a change interval but in the technical service manual and at the dealer they all say only when there is a problem.

Maybe it is only for areas where fuel isn't as refined at in our countries?

I didn't trust it either but I checked at 200K KM (120K miles) and I still have the proper pressure at my fuel rail and the fuel I took out of the rail to have a look at was good and clear and not rusty or milky etc. So I guess the filter is fine being left. When I get to 300K KM (180K miles) I will change it just because.

I change the fuel filter in my ranger every 30K with a WIX. I don't understand the need to cut a used filter open, when after you remove it you can just empty out gas from the back end to see how dirty it is.

always comes out black as oil for me

The mesh on the pump inlet keep out small birds, etc.
All fuel injection systems have additional filters.
They are much larger than old carburetor types, as they have to maintain flow and volume for many thousands of miles, and get all but hte smallest crud out of the fuel and away from the injectors..
