Right. Is it illegal? Probably not. Is it unethical? Well, probably so, but I've seen different definitions of what's ethical from person to person.

Basically, as Civic says, Internet access is there to attract business. If you patronize this business on a regular basis, then using their connection may in fact be justified and not questionable from ethical standpoint. Alas, we all have different standards...

I'd use it, because I also do not trust the backbone not to sniff any confidential data sent via non secure tunnel or connections.

My main concern would be any time limit they set and the congestion they have. Panera Bread's 802.11b network is awfully slow and congested to a point of practically useless. I also run so many non web things that I would hate to open the browser and click I agree every hour to keep my connection up.

There, I fixed it.

Well, technically, some municipalities consider the magazine to be *their* property once your neighbor puts it in the bin.....

You seriously think eljefino would take a window ?

Whether it's offered for free or not, whether there's a written contract or not, I don't consider it "ethical" to base your home useage on their system...unless you buy a family pack every night.

Like the free sample washer fuilds that are sometimes on offer at the car parts places...they are free, but ethical is one or two, not a pocket full.

McD's, panera bread, some wendy's, libraries, and local libraries offer free wifi too. live near these places. slap a wifi extender on top of your roof. free wifi. my job pays for my broadband at home. free internet for me for over 2 years now. so I haven't resorted to anything like that.

The best analogy would be if said magazine caught a gust of wind out of said recycle bin, because the neighbor didn't secure it.

Broadband speed is nothing, without content.

McDonalds puts a lot of stuff in the air for the neighbors to tolerate. The smell of frying nuggets. The dust of tires and brakes from the drive-thru. Microscopic dander from employees not washing hands. What's a little 2.4 GHz signal?

After all, we can't control where the wind blows. I've verified this several times after breaking wind. However, I routinely pick up little bits of trash from my neighbor's recycling bin that have blown into my yard. Typically, these involve receipts to various locals they have frequented. It's been interesting to know what places they think are apparently good cuisine. Maybe it's a new marketing scheme?

Unfortunately, I've yet to find any other good reading material float by my way.

I don't think I'd be able to live next to a fast food place. However, there is a Merita bread nearby that I'd love to live next door to. It smells absolutely wonderful.
