Fram ultra external filter change.

Changed out the external filter on my ‘15 GMC with 6L80. Did cut open the filter, looks like it half up great being in service for four years. Only put ~ 16,000 miles on it. Next time will run for probably five years. Seem like there was a lot of fine particles inside the filter.


Made a mistake of filling transmission with Dexron 3 in place of 6. Probably run for a month or so and change it back to 6 when I get time.

My understanding is that Dex VI is backwards compatible with III, but III is not forward compatible with VI. In other words, I don't think I'd run it the way you have it mixed at all in a truck that new. I would drain it all and replace it, to not chance any trans damage going forward.

Back when I had my 2002 Tacoma I installed a remote filter on my auto. It was over kill. I also used a filter mag. It caught a lot of clutch material.

Had it for 14 years? Traded it in like an idiot for my 15 Tacoma in 16. I did cut it open and the magnet did a pretty good job.

Did the transmission flush a week later. Took 9 qts to fill it up. Used Dexron VI this time.
