This filter was used on a 1997 Saturn SL1 for seven months and 3,300 miles. The car has been neglected in the past. I've been putting over sized oil filters on it and using 10W-30 HDEO and changing the oil every 3,000 miles to try and clean it up. I'm starting to wonder if the filter is surviving the entire 3,000 miles without going into bypass. Hopefully it will cleanup soon...

The base plate still has the strange golden deposits on it like the last filter.

It's not exactly possible to see if it was in bypass but the signs are good with no media distortion and the media actually looks pretty clean.

Very nice end disc shot it looks perfect

Not going on any empirical data, of course, but if I had to guess, I'd say that filter was still operating normally. Yes, there was stuff deep down in the folds, but overall the media looked to still have some life left in it.

Keep it up.

i just cut open a wix that was on for a year.... super wavy pleats

I think the tough guard or even ocod may be my go to cheap filter

even though the wix isnt cheap at $7.99 each

I'm currently in the process of running a Tough Guard for a planned 8,000 miles. I've never seen anyone really test these filters like I've seen with the Extra Guard & everyone's favorite the Ultra. I'll cut mine open after 8,000, it'll be almost spring before I can though.

I ran one at 5k with Pennzoil HM then an additional 3k with M1 TDT and MMO. Here. Not quite a "test", but you get the picture.

Interesting that mine had the metal crimp while the longer 3600 did not. If anything, I would think it'd be the other way around.

The TG is my favorite Fram though I still like the orange can. I just ran a TG 3600 like the one above for 2 OCIs and 10.5k on our Concorde. Construction wise it looked the same as above, held up very well. A little wavier due to winter use and short trips, darker of course due to the extended FCI but thats it. Great filters, easily capable of 10k in a relatively clean engine.

OP with all that crud keep doing what you are doing.

Good to hear you guys have ran the Tough Guard to its limits. I change my oil & filter under 10,000 miles on all my vehicles but I always use Fram Ultras or Motorcrafts. I always thought me using Ultras might have been a waste when the cheaper Tough Guard would work just perfect for my oil change intervals. Guess this confirms it & I'm sure it'll confirm it more when I cut mine open at 8,000.

Branson304: I'll have 13k on a TG#3614 after this run of "formerly SYNTEC" EDGE 5w20 is changed at 10.9k. I'll cut it open for the gracious members to see

Yeah at those intervals TG all the way. The TG is a legitimate 10-12k filter on most engines.

I will start another thread at some point but for posterity I will post here as well. Here is the 10.5k TG3600 run for 2 OCI's on our Concorde, time was about one year so it was subjected to it's fair share of winter short trips.

Didn't have my usual tools handy so the marks in the media and the can rippage are from me opening it. It had 45 pleats, all was intact and there was nothing of concern that I could see. The media was fairly dark from the long run but did not appear to be clogged in any way. I believe the TG is a 10-12k filter in a relatively clean engine.
