Howdy folks. I did my best to search for this and didn't find anything, so here goes...

I got a good deal on a four pack of the Fram Extra Guard oil filters for my wife's VW Beetle turbo, partially since everyone seems to love the OCOD here now. The part number is PH10600, and it's a very specific filter for this particular motor or at least for VWs. I would be very surprised if it fits anything other than a VW or Audi model. VW puts the OCI at 10K miles but Fram says it's a 5K mile oil filter. I know that many here suggest that perhaps 10K mile OCIs are not good here in the US with the gas we have, and I personally have run many assorted oil filters long past 5K miles with no discernible affects. Thoughts on a reasonable OCI with this filter? Current oil is Castrol edge 0W40, which meets all the appropriate VW specs.

Thanks, Doug

They cost so much I'd use them for at least 10k. The OCOD will last the factory-recommended OCI with no problem

There is a Fram Ultra XG10600 that is over $30 at Walmart, about $25 from Rock Auto, maybe $20 on eBay. That I would leave in for 5 years!

The best option for the 2.0T using this stupid filter is the M1-404A from AAP/CQ. Because they include that filter with the M1 oil change deals, and is supposed to be good for 20k. They also have the Purolator Boss at a fair price, and it is also included in some of the oil change deals.

If you have regular access to either store (AAP or CQ) and that regularly has either the Boss or M1 for your car in-stock, that would be my choice.

The best price I've seen for an oil filter that fits this car is this case of Super Auto filters. Listed at $55 for a case of 12, with a best-offer option. If they would accept an offer of $48 for the case, that is $4/filter and a very good price

I run Castrol 0W40 for 5K OCI. That FRAM should be good for 5k. I would not trust them 10k. I would not trust 10k this ultra I use in my POS Toyota.

Both cars in my signature take the same oil filter. The early Fram PH10600 was made in Mexico and of higher quality. The USA made ones have a smaller diamter than the Mexican made ones and the OEM one.the gasket doesn't fully sit on the mating surface. BTW, the retail price for the German made OEM VW Mann oil filter is $12.30. Advance Auto charges more than the dealer for having it in a Mann box. I got 3 of the USA made Frams at Walmart for $1 each. If I still have one in my work shop, I'll cut it open this evening after work. The filter at full retail is no bargain at Walmart. Go to a dealer.

Fram's 5k recommendation for the PH series has more to do with marketing and capacity than ability IMO. As long as your VW engine is reasonably clean, the PH series will easily meet the factory OCI requirements.

You do realize, 30,000 km is less than 20,000 miles, right? Thus a Mobil 1 0w40 that is suggested for 503.01, if you change the oil and filter at 20,000 miles, you voided the warranty terms.

Your best bang for the buck is still the Mann filter.

how about the tried & true alternative method...if oil is good enough to meet spec for 10k oci & filter is rated for 5k oci then use 2 filters for 5k each & replace the amount of oil lost by removing the first filter; yes...it works ...±

I do not trust companies that in their marketing always have "tough," "super," "ultra." I am guilty of using FRAM Ultra, but that is 5K, period. For $10 looks decent for 5K change.

Or trusted method using OEM filter which is $12.

Well the oil filter on this engine sits closed end on the top. As long as you loosen it and let the oil drain, there isn't actually any oil loss. This is actually a pretty good idea, although from what I read here I'm sure the OCOD would be fine for 7500 miles....

Thanks, Doug

The better akternative is to use a filter that can go as long as the oil.

^^^ Fram's warranty statement has always indicated they warrantied their filters for the OEM recommended FCI.

But I see they have removed the 5K miles use recommendation for the EG and removed the 10K miles use recommendation for the TG. They now just say the Ultra is good for "upto 20K miles".
