Fram Filters

I know that Fram filters have earned their bad reputation but the new ones I see on store shelves are made in USA. The old cheap ones were made in Korea I think. What is the general consensus regarding the new American made Fram filters?
 
Every Fram filter I've seen was U.S. made for ever. Maybe they import some for some limited volume foreign car applications...or maybe they were importing a lot.

In any case, the photos I've seen of Frams that blew apart or were glued with clear passages around the filter element were all original U.S. Frams.

Almost all of Fram's fuel filters are made overseas, and I've seen the shift go to China.
With some exceptions, MOST of the Fram oil filters have always been made in the USA. I wonder how long that will last......
 
The Fram motorcycle filters were made in Asia for a time; but Korea doesn't ring a bell.
Newer stock are Canadian made last time I checked.
I use a auto filter the last few years.
 
Just tried a Fram again (Tough Guard) for the first time since 2001......the valves tap on my Jeep 4.0 like crazy for a few seconds. I'm taking it off this week and going back to a Napa filter.

Just live with it for a while. Get your money's worth out of it. No 4.0 engines were harmed in the making of this post.

Seriously, I have been using Fram oil and air filters in all of my cars and trucks for 25+ years and have not experienced a single filter related failure of any kind in that time. In this time, my family has logged well over a million miles and includes over 335000 miles on a 1988 Toyota.
I am going to switch to Wix and Purolator brand filters based on what I have read here but I will admit that its not easy to give up on something that has never let me down.

Cut one open and compare it to any other manufacturer and it won't be that hard.

Exactly. All you're buying is that fuzzy feeling. There are better alternatives out there for less coin, IMO.

If you continue to use Fram, you will still get many good miles out of your vehicle. But like some previous posters stated, there are better choices out there. Most likely you will get more filter material in a competitor's brand and if you cut a Wix filter open (depending on the application) you will probably see a coiled spring instead of a leaf spring. In the applications that have them, most competitors will use a metal end cap instead of Fram's cardboard.
Just do a little comparison.
 
Unfortunately I used them for years prior to coming to this site. I never had a problem, but at current pricing of them I'm glad I joined this board and made the switch.

I have run Fram filters for 40+ years without any problems whatsoever. Most cars sold with 140,000 + miles with no oil related issues. Now as a BOBISTHEOILGUY reader, I feel so guilty. I have abused my engines all these 40+ years. Out of guilt I now load my engines with WIX, PureOnes & OEM filters only. Me-O-My what have I done?

X2. never had a problem with fram oil filters growing up. i use pure one now but if i had to use a fram i wouldnt sweat it for a normal 5K oci
 
Frams work. They obviously do the job. They have a higher incidence of popping up with issues just due to being the most popular filter. The only thing anyone really can have against them ..from most normal views is that you're usually paying too much for them. There's better buys to be had that offer more for the same money.
 
I used Fram for 20 years before reading this site, never had a problem. Switched to NAPA's because everyone and all the testing said Wix were better and Fram was junk. Since I've had an oil filter that had messed up threads, an air filter that didn't fit which I posted on here, and a fuel filter in my tractor that disintegrated when the diesel touched it. All NAPA-WIX. I use Frams again.

Having a Fram in one hand and a Wix in the other is like have a pile of (censored) in one hand and a $20 bill in the other hand. You won't miss the Fram.
 
The switch is on... I will cut a few Purolators open after they have been used and I already have two used Frams waiting on the garage shelf. It may take a month or two, but I will revive this thread and let you all know my results.
