Hello, I'm about to do my first oil change on my fiances 2014 chevy sonic 1.8. It uses a cartridge style filter and i'm curious if the Fram cartridges are decent quality for a 3500 miles oci? It's convenient for me to get the filter and oil at walmart all in one stop or I'd just get an ACdelco cartridge.

I just used a Fram cartridge in our 2.4 Ecotec Malibu. I'm impressed with the wire backing because I know sometimes these get crushed. On the flip side the Hengst / Delco cartridge never did crush in this car.

why only 3500 miles? You can go much more than that between oil changes, as indicated by your car's OLM

The OE ACDelco filter PF2257G is a Hengst E611H. Hengst makes very good filters, and the OE filter they make for your Sonic is no exception.

The best filters to use for that car are:
ACDelco PF2257G
Hengst E611H
Mann HU 612/2x
Mahle OX401d

I've never run the fram in our Cruze but wouldn't be concerned. The Delcos off rockauto, buying 4 to 8 at a time, were a few bucks cheaper last time I checked.

Don't Wal-Marts carry some ACDelcos?

I tried regular Fram cartridge in my Cobalt 2.2 and it seemed to run smoother at lower rpms and thottle openings, but wasn't as willing to GO as the 457G- nothing but 457Gs as far as the eye can see for me now.

You shouldn't HAVE to visit the dealer as many parts houses carry AC Delco parts.

Good luck!

I did have an issue once with a Fram ultra cartridge filter on a Toyota 3.5. The Fram had hard plastic end caps and I had an odd ticking sound develop after the oil change. I replace the filter (not the oil) with a Toyota OE (no end cap)and the rattle went away.

YMMV

Fram cartridge filters are not up to OEM standards, from my experience.
I had one on a Euro car, and it had slightly collapsed in the center from pressure(hour-glass shape), and the ends where it seals were so loose, it fell off the cap. OEMs have to be pulled off. So, I wonder how much oil blows by the loose end seals.

Agree with others - use the AC or a Hengst.
Fram is great when in a metal can though.
