I stopped by O'Reilly's to pick up 5 quarts of Castrol and a Fram filter for $15.99 for my friends Mazda 3. Well the OC combo came to $21.XX because the Fram 9641 isn't included in the OC combo sale.

They want $9.99 for this filter. I told them no thanks and left. The Fram is made in South Korea, probably the same company that makes cartridge filters for the other companies. I opened the Microgard 9641 box to check out the filter. It was the exact same "Made in South Korea" filter that was in the Fram box. The Microgard was only $4.99.

I will be heading over to Napa to pick up some Quaker State and a Napa Gold filter for $14.52 instead.

They are probably the same exact filter, as they both have "9641" in their part number. This is typical when one manufacture makes the same filter but badges it differently for each customer. Same goes with WIX vs. NAPA Gold products.

I noticed that the Fram cartridge filters are really expensive - for example, for my CTS the STP filter is $4 and the Fram one is $12 at AutoZone. Now I have to say, the Fram one does look great and is even sealed in a little bag, but $12 is Mobil 1 steel can price territory.

This is true now of the microgards, but before they were made by Purolator and still used the Fram numbers.

Actually they used the purolator with a g in front of the purolator part number

I have one of the older microgard boxes infront of me. Actually we are both right as they fram and purolator numbers are listed on it. MGL4967 and GL14476. The new one just has the fram number.
