I knew Clyde's Maxlife love would lead to full-fledged thick oil madness.

I run a thick oil in my car only b/c there are known problems with low pressure. I'm being lazy and not buying a new oil pump until further notice. But GC would be a great oil in my car.... THere are plenty of high miles cars out there that have never ever seen anything above a 30 weight.

Then I guess my old VW Jetta which has almost 300,000 miles is in trouble running 5w30 and 10w30 all of its life.

You can (and SHOULD ) run what the owners manual states . (they know more than us)

By the way Bill, what does your owner's manual state for the MFG's recommended viscosity of that VW Jetta?

It states 10w30 for most temps.

I used 5w30 when it came out since it does get fairly cold here and back then the 5w30 had much better cold start temps than 10w30.

Then once spring came out I went to 10w30. Now that the Jetta lives in San diego (My sister in law owns it now) I've told her just to run a name brand 10w30 conventional oil year round and get on with it.

I just got back from San Diego and changed the transaxle for the first time. I drove it around to warm up the oil and then after the change to check it out.

The Jetta ran great and I noticed it had a Fram filter on it like it has had most of it's life. Told her that there are better filters for the Money (like Supertech) but she hates Wal-Mart so Frams it gets...

The manual did state that you could use 10-40w if the lower temp was above 30-40 degrees (If I remember correctly) on up.

All I'm trying to say is that just because a engine has 77k on it, you need to use a thicker oil is wrong.

77k is nothing. I hate the oil companies with this Maxlife this and Highmilage that oils that if your engine has over 75k you need to run these.

More marketing doo doo.

If your engine is running fine (normal), just run normal oil no matter what mileage it has.

Clyde,
I hear you are looking for Maxlife syn. I have 5 quarts of SL maxlife syn (I have a UOA posted showing the content of this same batch of oil if you want to see it) that I will trade you for 5 qts of equivelent but SM 5w20. You pick the brand! I aint picky I aint going to use the ML syn for a long time so might as well get something I can use. May not be worth your while but I thought I'd let you know that you can get some around S.A.
