Have a 22 F250 Tremor with the 7.3l Gas engine and 49k miles. She goes from southern AZ in the summer to Northern Alberta (Canada) winters along with what Montana throws at her so she sees hard desert summer use as well as stupid cold in the winter

Was getting “free” oil changes from the dealer & am now paying to have them done (disabled & can’t change oil) so I’m looking around for options on high quality oil filters and what to avoid

What are the recommendations on what filters are worth trusting?

How about searching the filter forum.
Plenty of up-to-date info here.

And BTW, you're unlikely to get any consensus, and so you're just going to be right back where you started from.

Who are you paying now to have it done? You will probably just be fine with whatever jobber filter they currently use unless you have a place the puts your own oil and filter for a fee.

I've been struggling with the filters for my trucks as well. I bought some K&N Silvers on sale at RockAuto for incredibly cheap (like $1 each) and cut one open. Made in China but they are built incredibly well. Good can thickness and strong flange, visually a good looking filter media (synthetic?), silicone anti-drainback valve, coil spring bypass. Actually mad at myself for wasting one by cutting it open un-used.

I also bought some US made Baldwins. Also built very well except for the inner core. I don't know if these are considered E-Core filters or not, but the inner steel core has divots where the oil is to flow through, but the divot machine doesn't look like it was pressing hard enough to break through the metal in most places. Looks to me like the flow is severely restricted and will bypass right away.

I bought some Wix filters (made in the US) when I first bought my truck as well. Cut one open and again, the build quality doesn't look bad (the glue is a bit sloppy) but has nice big holes in the inner steel core for good flow. Wix has had some quality issues, but I don't think its across the entire line of filters.

So in short, it depends on the application. I know that's not helpful at all, but I think it where the market is. For what its worth, my next try will be Donaldson or Fleetguard filters.
