So I just had this guy come in requesting 20W50 in his minivan because he likes it better "for the winter" told him, you know that odyssey is spec'd for 5w20... And 20W50 is some pretty thick stuff. "You don't know what you're talking about, you just want to sell me something more expensive." Dude, the oil is the same price, but whatever.

Just needed to get that one out. Said his mechanic, who can do magic on anything, but who can't change oil, told him to use that...

Can't fix stupid or ignorant. You could have sent him here, LOL!!

There has to be a number of youtube videos on pouring various oils in cold weather. If he doesn't believe you, maybe he would have believed one of those.

But yeah, as the late Jim White on KMOX used to say, "You can't fix stupid."

I know 4 sure that I won't be considering/using him as my indy mech.

Currently using 5W20 in my fit (5W30+ 20% 5W20 in wifey's camry)...last nite: -5C.

It wouldnt matter. This guy knows best and OP doesnt know what he's talking about. Argument is futile, IMO.

Hopefully OP put an additional signature line that the customer assumes all risks associated with using a non-OEM grade.

Or at least made sure it was well documented on the paperwork that he demanded it, and he signed for it when he picked it up.

Wow...the unwarranted unflagging loyalty some people have that causes them to ignore common sense and reason.

I wonder if he swapped numbers. 5w20 to 20w5--but wait that doesn't sound right, so must be 20w50... Beats me, the fact that he argued probably means "he knows best."

I've heard there are people who refuse to admit they are wrong. Even if you were to pull the oil cap off the engine, and show the owners manual, they would argue until you dropped dead. I've never understood that. Well, I can understand hating to admit to being wrong, but at some point the facts get pretty undeniable.

lol!

My honda fit runs off of a golfcart battery (1/2 of the CCA of that typical to Honda 51/51R series), and currently running PYB 5W20. Starts right off @ -15C a wk ago w/o block heater, anything.

Me scrambling for full-syn (for the sake of better cold flow properties), gosh! the sky is falling....

I'd be tempted to tell his mech to pound rock.

Q.

1) Everyone in winter has really thick oil in their cars.
2) 20w50 is really thick oil.
3) Therefore, 20w50 should go in his car, too.

It's been discussed a lot on here; most mechanics don't have a good understanding of oil.
