Why isn't Fram, supertech, etc. required to have a silicone ADBV like the FL820s, all the aftermarket filters have to meet manufacturer standards so why no silicone ADBV?

Maybe a silicon valve isn't spec'ed. My understanding is that the factory installed Champ filters that come on new trucks don't have a silicon valve.

Apples and oranges.

The engine department of Ford requires a silicon anti-drain. ( and all Champ filters for the new engine plants have the silicon anti-drain)

The Motocraft division of Ford does not.

They are two seperate divisions within Ford.

Filter Guy,

But did Ford specify that they wanted a silicone ADBV on Motorcraft oil filters when they contracted Purolator to make their oil filters ??

I believe that a silicon ADBV and a threaded end bypass are part of the spec for the Motorcraft FL820s.

Are you sure that the others meet the required spec? I'll have to check my owners manual and see what it says about the filter.

It seems that Fram actually disclaims themselves from any damage done by their filters with the use of fancy wording.

One has to realize that the rubber anti-drain has been used by engine OEM's ever since they first required one.

Some OEM's are changing their "preference" to silicon.

The "spec" is that their must be one and it must not leak X millileters of oil in Y length of time.

The compound is not part of the spec. Yet.

Hence apples and oranges between the Ford engine division and the Ford Motocraft division.

The Ford factory installed 820 manufactured by Champ have silicone ADBV. They also have about double the media and much stronger media, also threaded end bypass. I cut two open last week and they are an excellent filter, comparable to any top of the line filter. It is sad that the aftermarket filter Champ builds for this application is such a POS.

In defense of the competiton. Motorcraft branded aftermarket filters are built to MOTORCRAFT specs. NOT Champ specs.

Ok Filter guy where's mine?

Everyone is in agreement that the FL820s is the best filter for the 4.6? What about Purolator or Wix, anre they really that worse?

IMHO, the BEST filter for the Ford 4.6L is a Mobil 1 M1-210. However, it's probably the most expensive, too.

Motorcraft FL-820S is a close second, in my book. It is what I use on my wife's Expedition.

Pete...geez, I thought I said that when I said the engine division has one spec and the Motocraft division is entirely different within Ford.

Anyone can build a Motocraft filter if they get the contract..

Pete,

I should have been more clear. What I meant is that the Champ, STP, Warner and other labels Champion produces in this part number I have found to be extremely substandard. The filters they build for OEM or aftermarket OEM branded, such as Motorcraft are well built. The two filters for the same app. have nothing in common and are built completely different.
