Hi,
Will a FL-400S (Newer shorter version) be able to handle a 5,000 or 6,000 mile OCI? Will use Syn in winter and Dino in summer.
The car has a timing chain and will see all highway miles.
Thanks for any and all answers from the experts here!

i see "size" of filter irrelavent to its filtering ability, i read alot of ppl using the fl400s on their lawnmowers, i find it silly

Is that a yes or a no vote?

I bet they will do a 10,000 mile OCI just fine.

A 5,000 mile OCI will be a walk in the park.

They increased the amount of filtering material when they shortened the can, and they shortened the can so that they could get another row of them on a pallet when trucking them across the country.

I do 5k Ocis with my focus using a FL400s, i'd not hesitate to do a 10k or run the filter twice with the looks of it after cutting it open.

A 5K-6K OCI on ANY Motorcraft filter is a piece of cake. Ford recently (September 2008) changed from the larger FL820S filter to a smaller FL500S filter on some engines while simultaneously (2011 model year) going to a 10K OCI. Obviously, Ford engineers have no problem with longer OCIs on a smaller filter.

i think the size of the can means little.
i have run an 820s and a k&n on my truck(roughly same height). then when i cut them open i found the k&n 2010 actually had a shorter element with more pleats than the 820s.

besides look at chevy trucks, they used to use coffee can size filters and now its more like a teacup

Ya, even the 303 HP, 5.3 L uses a little filter now.

The filters are smaller to save costs, and make room in a tight engine bay. A larger filter will generally be able to filter more oil and for longer, but it all comes down to the sq inches of paper inside.

Ya. I think, too, the engineers 20 years ago used the biggest filters out of habit. But before that there was a lit more people still using straight weight oils rather than 5W-XX.
May have something to do with it.

I like bigger filters though.

6KMI. should not be a problem, unless you are dealing with a worn engine that dumps a heavy load of soot in the oil. In that situation a filter could get loaded and require replacement at 1500 Mi.
