We have a small fleet of nine 2002 E350 vans (5.4,auto) with over 150K miles each, 2 Lexus RX330 (50K), a 2004 Saab 95 (30K) ARC,currrently using Wix oil filters and Amsoil synthetic 10W30. One 2003 Dodge Sprinter using OEM filters and Amsoil synthetic 15W40 (summer) Mobil 1 0W40 (winter) (100K) and misc: lift truck, mower, pressure washer, etc. All vehicles get OC at 5K, except Sprinter which is 10K, misc stuff yearly. I'd like to buy one grade oil and after some research here and on the web, it seems Amsoil synthetic HD 5W30 or GC 0W30 might work. I like to buy 55 gallons at a time. No oil analysis yet. Any other recommendations?

Given that you are going to run an oil shredding Saab 95 and a M-B Diesel Sprinter I would use the Amsoil HDD 5w30 for mixed fleet use. I dont know what the recommended oil grade is for the M-B (Sprinter) but I would not use GC 0w30 in a Diesel that Specs CH-4, CI-4, or CI-4+.

I think that Amsoil Series 3000 5W30 would work in all of the above. I also think that you could use M1 0W40 but I doubt it would work as well as the S3K 5W30. I would also consider a 5W40 like Amsoil,M1 Delvac, Castrol, Rotella-T Synthetic. A 5W40 would provide excellent protection to all of the above mentioned vechiles. The Rotella Synthetic is about half the price of the other synthetics mentioned above.

I am an old 5W40 Rotella user and after trying Schaeffer 5W40 I am sold completely. It is run in all my diesel Kubotas and I have also run it in a 03 v-6 Tacoma with 10K intervals in it being the norm. It actually exceeds what I am comfortable with as far as intervals.
Their 7000 series blends are awesome for the price. I run the 5W20 in two Hondas at 10K intervals. Thats full synthetic territory for 3.25 a qt.
I started out buying this stuff by the qt. but then I had to have more so gallon jugs were the norm.
My Schaeffer rep. says he can cut a better deal if I buy maybe 30 gallon drums. hmmm.

Would Rotella synthetic 5W40 be too thick an oil for the 5.4 modular motor and the Saab 2.3T motor??

Nah, it wouldn't be too thick for the SAAB. AMSOIL Euro 5W40 and Rotella T Synth 5W40 are 9-5 owner favorites. The owner's manual specs 0W30 or 0W40 and allows up to 50 or 60 if synth is used. In discussions with a SAAB engineer, he said he'd recommend 0W30 for all but spirited driving. Yet he uses M1 0W40....

From what I have seen the Ford 4.6L/5.4L/6.8L will function fine on anything from 0W-20 to 20W-50. Anything with a 5W rating should get oil to the camshafts fast enough in any weather your likely to experience.

I looked at the specs for the 5W40 Schaeffer oil and it is very well made oil. I priced a barrel of the 5W40 Schaeffer plus Rotella Synthetic 5W40, Mobil 1 0W40 and Amsoil HDD 5W30.
Prices range from $870 to $1300 per barrel. Got some more thinking to do. I may have to adjust the OC to 7,500 miles (maybe 10K) based on oil analysis.

Thanks to everyone for their input!!

Decision has been made. Amsoil HDD 5W30 with EAO filters, we will take the OC interval out to 10,000 then do an oil analysis to determine the verify the OC interval. The other oils were excellent choices also!! Thanks for all the input.
