With the recent passing away of my Dad and the subsequent inheritance of his guns, I decided it was high time that I empty my gun safe and record all of the information on all of my guns. I have collected many through the years and just never took the time to record all of the information. It took a bit to put all of it in a spreadsheet, but that mundane task is now completed.

In performing the task, I found the first gun that my Dad ever gave me in the very back of the safe. It was a Harrington & Richardson Topper Model 58 in .410 gauge. It was your quintessential single-shot break-down shotgun from circa 1975. Still in pristine condition with a minimal amount of scratches (I will post a photo later). I can still remember that first squirrel hunt and the smell of the woods on that misty morning.

Now I said all of that to ask, what was the first gun your Dad gave you and was it for a first hunt?

My first guns were inherited from my grandfather: a Winchester 30-30 and a World War II era Belgian-made Browning Hi-Power (complete with the Waffen-SS emblem above the trigger guard), which the Germans manufactured after capturing the Fabrique Nationale Armes de Guerre plant.

My first gun was a Cooey .22 single shot.

My first shotgun was a Harrington & Richardson .410 in full choke with a 3" chamber.

It is old, but I bought it brand new.

It was at the back of an old sporting goods store in Rigaud still in storage and overlooked by a previous owner.

It has a beautiful Walnut stock too.

My first gun was from my papa. A mossberg 410 bolt action model 183d-a a great gun. Its currently at the gun smith. A pin in the bolt broke and it wont load shells from the magazine correctly. Its been 4 days and I am missing it like crazy. I like knowing exactly where it is at all times.

Sorry about your Dad.

The first gun I ever got was a Christmas present. I still have it almost 40 years later. Winchester .177 BB/pellet gun.

The next first real gun a collectable non shooting .38 Merwin Hulbert revolver. I inherited that from my grandfather. I

just bought my first real shooting gun a Ruger LCP for self defense. I need to find a good conceal carry method.

While Dad didn't give it to me, per se, he did arrange, through a friend of his at Smith and Wesson, for me to get a S&W 5906 at cost as I was getting ready to leave for Operation DESERT STORM.

Still have that 5906.

Great gun.

Dad got me an 870 as my first gun to keep. I was sixteen. The first gun that I used was an old, H&R .12ga that he was given as his first gun a while back... Dad still has the old break action. He probably will give it to me for my son to use some day. My son's only four so it will be a while.

John.

bb guns... started shooting around 4-5. No need to expose kids to sulfur and lead too early. Taught all the other important stuff all the same.

A Savage? Stevens? Model 94 single barrel .410, with the mottled brown plastic Tenite stock. Dad traded a cheap camera for it when I was still in diapers.

We still have it- it will go to my nephew.

Tex, Condolences on pops. May he RIP.

Great thread. My first guns were a Browning BPS (Pump 12GA) and a Ruger 22. Nearly 30 years later I still have them and both are pristine. My boys (5 and 7) have shot the 22. This past Christmas I bought each of them their own Savage 22 Rascal (stock fits their frame; single shot bolt for safety).

I grew up on a farm in Western MA. When I was younger I pestered my grandfather (no father)to shoot the old 12GA so much he figured he'd show me. One day outa no where he dragged me past a field up into the woods. Handed me over/under 12GA and 2 shells. I believe I was 10 and don't remember the shell type. He pointed to a rotted stump and handed me 2 shells and said have at it. I was thinking...only 2 shells?? He had to tell me turn the shells around to load them...:(((

After I fired the first shot; held loose against my shoulder. He asked if I wanted to shoot the other..YIKES!

All he said was don't worry, you will never hold a shotgun loose again. Give it another year and you'll handle it just fine.

My first guns were a Winchester Model 69 bolt action 22 and a Marlin 1894 in 25-20 WCF.

My first handgun was a Walther P38 (early alloy frame post war commercial gun) and when I turned 14 and could hunt my dad got me a Mossberg 500. When I turned 16 we traded it in and he bought me a Japanese made Browning A5 Light 12ga.

1st handgun was an 1858 Remington revolver replica and my 1st longarm was an 1856 Enfield rifle-musket. I learned to shoot on those and still have them this very day.
My 1st cartridge(modern) gun was a rusty K98k with a dark pitted bore. Lots of lessons learned from that one.

Thanks Pal; it was a difficult time, but I have many memories to get me through it.

My first rifle was a Marlin 22 my cousin gave me when I was about 14. I cut his grass for him one summer and wouldn't take any pay, (he was struggling with cancer). At the end of the summer, he took me back to his bedroom and handed me this rifle. I still have it and it is still a pleasure to shoot.
