I have an 84 Toyota Supra 5MGE DOHC I6 and today after about 15 miles of driving in hot weather the oil pressure started to drop, close to zero even at 2500RPM. After stopping and checking it over for a few minutes it would restart with reasonable pressure again, it seemed to run fine the whole time. After I got home I dropped the oil out and pulled the filter. The oil was GTX dino 10W30 and the filter was a Penz PZI-21. The oil looked very clean but the oil filter didn't dump much oil out when I took it off, seemed like it was nearly empty. Could the filter have been clogged and not gone into bypass? I think the pressure gage is after the filter.

The Penzoil filters, at least most of them, are Orange Frams painted yellow.
It's likely your pressure relief valve stuck open for a moment(it's in the engine).
The filter shouldn't be clogged, especially with clean oil, unless your running it for very long miles or several oil changes.
My 2¢

Yes ..as turboJim says ..change the sender out as a cheap thing to do. Install a real gauge (cheaper than a mechanics pressure testing gauge) is the next step.

After that shows true low/no oil pressure, I still don't see it being the filter or the oil. That would have to be one worn engine.

My boss had an old Ford Falcon. If you stopped to abruptly, the oil light would flicker for a second or two. He said it was the oil splashing out of the bearings. It was quiet enough and ran for a very long time

defective guage or sending unit?

If the pressure sender is orginal, it should be changed.

If the oil level was correct, and engine ran good without any noises, I wouldn't worry about it.

How many miles on this engine? maintenance history?

Use a thicker oil to make up for tired engine or tired oil pump.

So I drained the oil into a clean pan and let it settle for a while and there were no unusual particles in the bottom. I got the snips out and cut the filter open. There were lots of black carbon looking particles on the outside part of the can and some of the pleats were a little wavy looking but no tears. Nothing else inside looked unusual but I'm no expert on what it should look like.

The engine was replaced recently with a Japan import motor with supposedly low miles. After I started it again it has normal oil pressure again. I looked at the oil pressure sending unit and noticed that the wiring ran across the motor mount. Perhaps the wire grounded out but I didn't see any exposed wires. I replaced the oil with some 15W40 GTX diesel I had on hand and a purolator PP filter.

Otherwise it runs "like a well oiled machine" - hopefully it is.

Thanks for the feedback.

Here's a picture(hopefully) of the filter material in the container that I drained the rest of the oil from the filter into. You can see all the black particles, almost like sand that came out of the filter. There is still some stuck between the pleats at the top.

Thanks Mike for getting the picture to work. I'm going to have to make some notes.

Anyway, does this look normal for oil that has maybe 1000km but close to a year in the sump? You can see all the black particles, almost like sand that came out of the filter. There is still some stuck between the pleats at the top.

Thanks
