Filter material.

I am just about to do an oil service on my Yamaha F150 outboard.
I am more than happy to pay the extra money for a genuine Yamaha filter made by Denso if it was definitely going to be better than all the after market options, I can buy around 3 Quicksilver marine filters compared to 1 Yam filter.

Cut open the Yam filters use a fibre materials but all the aftermarket filters use the standard pleated material, ignore the $13.60 on the Yam picture, it’s probably an old picture as they are now around £20-£30 each in the UK, sometimes even more.

Any views will be greatly appreciated.

Pretty sure the shorter 3614 and the longer 3600 cross reference to these. If that's the case the fram endurance either the long or shorter one at just under $13 for both would be my pick over that overpriced denso. I'd also use the quicksilver if it's a third of the price of the denso. Thanks for the cut and posts.

Thanks for your reply, I did actually get a couple of Quicksilver filters today so I may give them a try, they were £7.85 each and supposedly 20 micron as well.
It seems its only Yamaha that uses this fibre kind of material in there filter’s compared to all the other outboard manufacturers that still use this pleated material.

I did an oil change on our X5 yesterday and MANN do a pleated material filter for that.

The Denso on the left looks much like some Toyota Denso OE with foam type media. Without knowing efficiency(unlikely) can't say I would pay the premium for it over other options you mention. Foam type media pretty rare now, and my speculation, nothing special in terms of efficiency.

Back in the day I used to pay $10 apiece for the Toyota Japan filters that are like the Yamaha/Denso ones in your picture. They were all the rage at the time but like every other OEM filter there was no filtration data to support a notion they were better in any way. Definitely unique and cool looking but I found no tangible reason to continue paying such a high price.

Here is one of the old threads on those filters. There are several more:

Yeah that yamer filter looks a little sus. That oil filter just looks like a cheap air filter.
I don't like it personally.

That's what I was going to say. Use a longer fram synthetic endurance if it will fit. I think the FE3600 is like $12 at Walmart.
If money is no object get an amsoil.

I just noticed he's in the uk because I saw the dollar sign on the first image but the £ symbol would have changed my response. I don't think he can get the ones we can but at the end of the day an outboard will be fine running whatever 99% at 30um oil filter. I just wouldn't spend much on it.

I have just read that Toyota link and its very intersting.
The Japan built filters were foam and the ones built in Thailand were paper blend.
The Yam filter in the picture above isn’t actually my filter, its an original Japan made Yam filter.
The current Yam filters are now also made in Thailand, when I am ready to change it I will cut the old filter up and have a look as it may actually be paper blend in there.

Oh pounds duha I blew right past that.
I don't know how available frams are over that way.

Just cut open the old filter and they aren’t a foam media inside anymore, also the current filters are marked up made in Thailand so maybe that has something to do with it, the old filters I believe were marked up made in Japan.

So the conclusion is the cheaper Quicksilver filters are hopefully just as good as the current Yam filters.

Looks like you got your money's worth out of that filter. How many hours were on it?

Looks much like the current Toyota Thai Denso(made) OEM filters.

Looks like they have changed now they are made in Thailand, the original Japan made filters like the one I posted at the beginning had the foam type of media in it.

For the Toyota OEM at least, Thailand has been the primary production coo for some time. As I mentioned in the previous thread, foam type media rarely seen now, but was Toyota Denso OE at one time.
