Which of the following file formats do PC users prefer for a letter? My guess is it's one of the .doc files, but which version?

If worst comes to worst, microsoft has a free download that lets you view/print word output.

.pdf is also worth considering if you want your thing to look the same on any computer.

And for what format do you ask now?

PDFs look the same on any platform/OS and are your best bet for true interchangeability. Otherwise RTF as it's readable by nearly everything but not good for heavily formatted documents.

If working with a business/corporate environment Word 97 (.doc) files are by far the norm, unfortunately.

I use a Mac. I want to give someone who uses a PC a formatted letter that I wrote in Libre Office. All that matters to me is that the PC user can open the file and that it's properly formatted.

Use the office format if they have office.

PDFs are great but don't allow editing beyond initial creation without authoring software.

If you don't need them to be able to edit the document and you want to be absolutely sure that it looks exactly the same on their machine, then PDF would be the way to go.

What does the recipient want? It's not too hard to save or export to those formats. So why not ask the one who gets the file what they prefer to use?
