Gas is just killing me. Im self employed and drive all over my state. I spent 600 last month. I get 20 mpg but that is not cutting it and Im driving a old truck to boot. I have some fears of major repairs soon with the miles I have on it.

I need an econobox. Im swayed at the Fiesta seden to be honest. I have not drove any of them yet. Toyota has gone to [censored] in a handbasket imo and no longer are the poster child of quality. PUrchase price is a major concern. I just want a base car with AC. They are 14 grand but have a 500 dollar rebate and I can get another 750 off with a though Ford.

I know Hondas have a good reputation. I just dont care for the looks of them. Im trying to through emotion out the door on this one. I have fairly low expectations with any of these. I need something that will last for 150k miles or more. Thats about 5 years for me. I hope my expectations are not too high. I hope a little engine will go this far.

I want your opinions good or bad on all three. I think the fiesta is best for me but I want to consult the BITOG community. Thansk.

There are a lot of cars I'd add to your list - Mazda 2, Chevrolet Aveo, Chevrolet Cruze, Even the new Fiat 500.

You do a lot of driving - drive them all, and go with the one that you are most comfortable in.

You'll regret it if you have to spend considerable road-time in an econo-box you hate!

old early to mid 90s festiva (or the later verson called Aspire) works wonders, can get you 40+mpg.

mid 90s civic or most corollas from mid-90s up works wonders too..so long as you stay away from oil burning/worn/ill-maintained ones.

New cars: Mazda 2/Fiesta gets my vote. Fit is a bit overly expensive.

Thank you for your opinion. The Chevy is OUT! Its personal and I dont do business with bail out companies. When they pay back the money then I will look at them. Im driving GMC truck now. Its a POS. Im done giving in more ways than one!

The mazda is a consideration and thank you for bringing that up. The cruze is too expensive and really is not in the class of the Fiesta or Fit. I dont mean to harp but it will be a cold day in you know where when I darken the door of a Chevy dealership again. They need to pay us back.

The new Sonic is interesting but I just wont give them my money. I stand on my principals.

If I was in the market for that size of car, I'd 'most likely' get a Mazda 2 - I like the slightly smaller, 'spunkier' style they have. They look a bit sportier than the Fiesta. JMO!

I will tell you to stay away from the toyota yaris. I work at a hotel front desk and many guests that have rented yaris' many brand new complain of the lack of quality, noise and cheap finish of the yaris compared to The new ford fiesta (very nice), and Mazda.

The nissan versa gets close to the same mileage and everyone who has one seem to be happy too. I like the mazda 2 its more fun looking and is a 2 door over only 4 doors of the fiesta.(they are the same car) My coworker got 42mpg in a 3 year old Focus so don't count that one out either. It's a little bigger and comfortable.

IM going to look at the mazda 2 also. I forgot about them.

Thanks for the opinions and keep them coming.

If you spend this much time in a car, I would consider upping the bar just a little and see if you can squeak into a Mazda 3.

That is what is keeping me from getting rid of my 2002 Taurus.

But if he is spending $600 a month on fuel with a car that gets 20MPG and gets into a car that gets 40MPG his monthly fuel cost will be halved to $300. That leaves $300 a month towards a car payment; that will fully pay for the car. Plus at the end of 5 years you will not have just burned a bunch of gas but have a car with some positive equity that you can sell/ trade/ keep driving.

Ever consider hyundai accent, kia rio , On kia forums theres a guy with close to 400000 miles on a rio5 apparently with no engine issues.

I was going to say wait for the Sonic, but no need to I guess....that and threads get locked when people tell the truth about....uhhhh ahem! - badmouth the Aveo.

I would go with the Mazda2 as well, but if you can stand the styling, you might wanna check out the SX4. I've seen some really good advertised prices on SX4 hatchbacks and crossovers...to me they are ugly as sin, and I like hatchbacks....own two of them now. Well one and a wagon. But I still think the SX4 hatchback is ugly.

If you are getting an automatic, I would look at the Kia Rio5. You can get a manual on the Rio sedan but the wagon is auto only last time I checked.

And again, if you like the styling,....and styling is subjective....while you are looking at the Rio5 check out the Seoul. (yes, I know it's spelled S-O-U-L but I think Seoul is more appropriate. Chrysler New Yorker, Chevrolet Malibu, Pontiac Parisienne, Kia Seoul.)

The Fit is far from a penalty box. We've taken days-long road trips in ours and been nothing but thrilled with the seats and fuel economy. For 2011 the base models come with cruise and stability control. Get a base MT model if you're concerned about fuel economy above all else.

If you're hauling cargo, give the Fit a serious look. With the rear seats folded down, there's a LOT of space behind the front seats, far more than any other car in its class.

The Mazda2 is supposed to be the better driver's car, while sacrificing MPG's and cargo room.

Really there's no way to know what's the best car for you until you test drive all of them.

Cross the Nissan Versa off your list. Ive got one, in manual transmission, with 24K miles, its been not so pleasant. The interior is nice and quiet, but the overall fit and finish is not upto honda/toyota standards. The gearbox is absolutely notchy, and ive been having reliability issues with the car after the 1st year.
My wife on the other hand has a 2001 Corolla, it may be an ugly econobox, but that thing putters along like a good watch, despite a previous owner who absolutely abused the car!
Give the new corolla spin, there's a reason why its the best selling car in the world.

I personally test drove Fiat 500 last week. Also driven Yaris sedan for long trips, which my friend has, Test drove Honda Fit, XB both 1,5 and 2,4. I beliave Versa long before. Also Smart car. Most ones I liked is XB,Fiat and Yaris. Fiat is fancy looking one and has more cool stuff, and more expensive. I test Drove 17K sport version with stick. If I would be in your shoes, I would get Yaris, cheap, reliable and good mpg. I haven't drive new focus or fiesta, or mazda2, so can't tell about them. Soon Scion IQ comes out, will test drive it for sure. I just like little cars

I got a Yaris last year as a commuter car and could not be happier. In the summer months I am always over 43 mpg and over 40 in the winter. I have put 26000 on the car in the first year and have not found anything this little car can't do. The car has tons of room when you put the back seats flat, my record is 8 18" tires with two passengers and suitcases. My dad who drives a 1999 Park Avenue and loves big cars is even looking at getting one.

BTW: You can add cruise control to a base Yaris for ~$150, afaik that's cheaper than any of the other cars on your list.

I recently bought a Honda Fit, but I'm biased to Honda reliability. The Fit is a good fit (pun intended) if you plan on hauling a lot of stuff, too. It has much more interior capacity than its competitors. Even though it returns 33 EPA Hwy, I'm getting 37 calculated average.

However, the Ford Fiesta/Mazda2 are great cars as well, and admittedly, offer more features for the money over the Honda.

The Aveo is junk as is the Yaris. Another good one to price shop is the Suzuki SX4. The Fiat 500 is likely going to be too small (and because its new, the price will have dealership markup extremes).
