Listen, unless your engine has some specific requirement not addressed with the modern oils available or the one of your choice, then add nothing. The car in your sig doesn't need anything, it would probably run forever on Crisco. Why mess around?

I use Red Line in my daily drivers and have decided that whatever is needed is already there, so no additional additives. I'll have a UOA coming as soon as I get to my next oil change. Red Line has been excellent for longer oil change intervals as in 10K instead of 5K.

The entire formulation or the aggregate amount anyway. But I just added .5 qt today and noticed how much quieter it is ad idle so would that be molybdenum? and the thing is starting to warm up faster too on first start, cold cranking props of a 5w30 Dexos 1 oil?!

They don't have to be expensive to be good. Got lots of Mobil 1 0w30, Castrol 0w30/0w40, etc for $2 a quart at Autozone's clearance last year.

So am I. That does not mean Techron, for example is a useless, "snake oil" product.

Isn't that Redline sli stuff better then Techron. I hate the "STP guys"

Your oil @ 5k miles is not the same as the oil when it was @ 0k miles. VI additives might help for top-off. I just dropped a bottle of Smitty's Super S Oil Treatment in my SL2.

Bought it on a whim when I was at Shell for only $1.65

#SUS S105

I won't bash any of the respondents.
However, it seems that some forum respondents did not read the question thoroughly.
To respond with a response of Motor Oil ??? Really?? Come on.
I was just asking for some input about it.

Some may call it snake oil, etc.
Personally the only one I use is the one mentioned. Motor Kote.

I have tried the following while chasing a ping:
1. No additives at all.
2. Regaine - no change
3. Techron - no change
4. MMO @ 1 oz / 5 gal. - engine seemed to run smoother but no change
5. MMO + TCW3 @ 1 oz / 5 gal. - engine running smooth as glass but did not clear the ping
6. Changing the air cleaner and cleaning the MAF sensor reduced pinging to minimal number of events.
7. Running the engine at an RPM over 3000 for 3 miles toward the end of my commute helps tremendously. I do this when ping is noticed and pinging is gone for maybe 500-600 miles.
8. Currently not running additives. Just name brand conventional oils.
9. My current fill seems to be getting better MPG numbers but other members say this is statistically impossible to really measure as there are too many variables.

I believe this is called an Italian tuneup?
Have you tried higher octane gas? I'm not sure if you are referring to a knock ping or something else.

Have you tried hot water through a vacuum line? I'd be willing to bet you'll get the best results doing that. Just use care and common sense to avoid hydro-locking the engine.

gents, thanks for the thoughtful replies but I apologize to fordman65 to taking the thread off topic. I was half asleep when I made my reply and was thinking additives in general. fordman65 was focused on oil additives. Other than MMO I do not have any experience with oil additives. MMO is not really an oil additive that would improve the oil characteristics.

Virtus_Probi - it is definitely predetonation under a load at about 1800 - 2000 rpms.

demarpaint - I have not yet tried the hot water injection cleanup yet.

Predetonation is typically a fuel problem. Add a couple gallons of super to the tank and that will bring up the octane a little. You'd have to experiment to find the right mix. You could just try plus but that's really just a mixture of super and regular and costs more than just adding some super to make your own mix.

I'd give it a try, it costs nothing and can be very beneficial.
