Favorite fixed blade knife ?

Do you Hunt ? Are you a hiker ? maybe a bit of a woodsman ? Just like to camp and be outdoors ? any of the above ? I know its pretty far off topic for BITOG but im in search of a new Fixed blade knife. I prefer stainless, better steel for blade sharpness retention, 5-6 inch blade prefered, leather sheath.

I have many, many knives im just itching for something new for Indiana deer hunts. The above knife will be primarily used in field dressing deer, however when im at deer camp your knife could end up getting used for just about anything.. so a quality blade is a must have. Ive caried everything from Case,Buck,Schrade,SOG,Benchmade,K-Bar.. and more..

If you have a favorite fixed blade knife that you think i might fancy post it up, and i will give it a look !
 
Combat - K-Bar
Cooking - Kyocera 5.5 inch ceramic, blade can be fragile, but sharper than *#%@$@...
Boot - Gerber Guardian, small, blade a little thick, but durable.

You want a carbon steel or cold rolled steel butcher knife, around 8-14 inches, to fillet a deer, and a butchers steel also to keep it sharp...

5-6" is a lot of blade IMO. I don't like any more than 3" even for elk.

Bark River makes a bunch of different profiles. I have a couple of their knives and have been very happy with them.

Being semi-custom they aren't cheap though.
 
I spent two of my younger years at a butcher that would also take in deer. We usually got 200-300 on opening day.

Anyhow, this will serve all of your needs far better than a heavier and thicker fixed blade knife. A very sharp and thin curved blade is best for your task.
 
Any good brand name will do but get a good sharpening system to put a consistent edge on it. Proper sharpening goes a long way, a top shelf knife is a piece of junk with a poor edge.
 
ka bar because I got mine for free and its durable.

For sailing I like something with a serrated edge for cutting lines, anything with a 3in blade will do.
 
My itch turned into several hour long looking session, Most everything everyone posted up falls into the "tactical" catagory and nothing wrong with that. The Case leather wrapped handles have caught my eye as of lately and even though inexpensive the Buck 119 special caught my eye too.
 
There are a ton of great knives out there. I could spend five grand one em and still find another I "need".
 
I have had great luck with the fallkniven branded knives. Skinned and quartered 2 bull elk in a day with an A1. Only had to touch up the blade a little with a diamond steel.
I use mine in the woods all the time.

I had a itch to do this, and durring my last visit to the Great smokey mountian knife store i purchased some full tang blanks.. still on my "to do list" suppose i should learn a little about it first
