fees? I'm 48yrs old and our family has never had an EZ-Pass. Even though we live in Northern NJ, near NY, it has never inconvenienced us. Just not on toll roads, usually mass transit into NYC. For a time now, my wife will be driving in and out of the city a good bit. If you get EZ-Pass from NJ there is a monthly fee. I thought there used to be a state that was in the system you could get without a monthly fee. We haven't found it.. it is only a $1/month I think. Any knowledge out there on the subject?

AFAIK, I've never had to pay a fee on my EZ-Pass issued from NY. I'm not in the NYC metro area, though.

Depending on the time and the route, a commuter plan might be a way of saving quite a bit of money. My wife had one for a commute where I-90 was the only way. It saved quite a bit over the regular tolls.

I need to figure this out, too. I'm charged a convenience fee for my MD EZ Pass (I first obtained my EZ Pass while on internship in MD 12 years ago.) The convenience fee is new, as of a 4-5 years ago, I think.

I also switch transponders between our two vehicles, if need. 99% of the time we take the larger vehicle anywhere we'd have to pay a toll, but I'd like to get two new transponders from somewhere relatively local.

Try Illinois I-pass. I think it's a $10 one time refundable deposit for the transponder, no additional recurring fees.

I got one for my parents in Ohio.

NY doesn't charge a fee from what I understand.

I have another question. From what I understand, I can switch it between my two vehicles - because they are both the same class.

But can I still use it or will I get a violation if I go through with my popup?

I've had the I-Pass for 5 years now. No fees after the original deposit.

$4 per month in PA to be mailed a monthly fee for up to 3 transponders.

Like others have mentioned, no recurring fees for the I-PASS. However, I'd make sure that the tolls charged in your situation are identical for a "foreign" transponder.

You need to list both license plates on your account so that if the transponder is not read, you won't get a violation fine.

I sometimes pull a camper or trailer with my vehicle.

Can I still use my transponder? Yes. On the Pennsylvania Turnpike, if the weight of the camper or trailer pushes you into a higher class of vehicle, the higher toll will be charged to your account. If you are traveling on other E-ZPass agency toll roads or bridges, please contact the appropriate agency for further information.

I don't know how they know the weight of your popup and if it pushes you into a higher class.

As someone else here said, VA does not charge a fee.

I just moved from VA about 8 months ago.

Do you know anyone who lives in VA? If so, maybe you can register with VA, since it works in NJ

Do they even care where you live?

MA doesn't charge a fee.

I have both my vehicles and my parents PA vehicles on the same account, no fees.

I have 2 Maine xponders and 3 cars registered with them.

$10 ea to buy, no maintenance fees. I have to prepay in increments of $20 and keep a balance of at least $15, but my credit card is automatically charged.

If I use it a bunch in a month for commuting, I get a rebate/ refund of some of the fees for the following month, but only in Maine. I can pay "full fare" or possibly "full EZ pass fare" in other states.

If you have a maintenance fee but get a better deal every time you pay a toll with a NY EZ I'd look into that. If you travel through another EZ state regularly check their deals.

I wouldn't think so. The EZ-Passes in our work trucks are from Virginia and we only use toll roads in PA and NY right now.

No fees in NH. Just have to buy the transponder( was $8.95 for me ).

I don't know how other states in the EZPass system work but here in NH we get a discount on tolls in this state when using EZPass. We do not get a discount outside of NH nor do non residents get any discounts here just because they have an EZPass.

The OP should check and see if any discounts would apply in his home state on tolls and compare what the savings might be for that vs the fees he would have to pay.

When I lived in NY they said you could not move them between cars, but I did it dozens of times with no problem.

I've only ever had one transponder, which I have used in 10-15 different vehicles over the past decade plus. I've only ever updated the list of allowable license plates on my online account when my primary-use vehicles have changed, so most of the different vehicles were not registered.

I've only had a notice sent to my house once for a misread transponder in an "unauthorized vehicle" (it was a long time ago, but I think I forgot to pull the transponder out of the glove box.) They sent me a notice, I filled in my EZ Pass info (and maybe paid a small fee,) and that was that.
