If it's the same engine we have here in the 2003 Civic SiR (and I believe it is since I believe they advertised up here that it's from the UK), it's 132ft.lbs at 5000rpm.

I am really shocked that you were able to achieve this excellent analysis and you weren't running Castrol or Red Line to do it.

Not that you're wrong, but exactly the same engine has disparate "recommendations" on viscosity. I can see why 5w-20 might help cold starts. I'd try it but not until the warranty is expired. No use asking customer service at Honda UK: all the brains are in Japan.

It's funny, I think, that you'd like to try 5w-20 but you're concerned about warranty issues, while many North American Honda owners would like to try 30-weight or 40-weight but are concerned about warranty issues. I am curious, nortones2, is 20-weight oil hard to find in the UK?

Cerbera: interested in the results, but could you say what engine (type/capacity) is fitted and where car is made? UK built Civics have 10w/40 semi-synth recommendation from most dealers, and I think from Honda UK, with 12,500m change interval.

This car was built in the UK, it's a underpowered clone of the CTR with a 5-sp transmission. The motor code is K20A3 which has 160hp with a lame vtec, not the 200hp K20A2 from the RSX-S (DC5). Think it's the same motor that is available in the UK Civic 5-dr.

The manual and oil cap show 5w20 with 5k oil changes for "severe" conditions and 10k for "normal" conditions. The manual says to replace the oil filter every other oil change. Can't image 20k mile oil filter changes helping.

Jay: Yes, there is a curious aspect to the differing approaches! Maybe it depends on how priority is given at industry level to fuel consumption. Can get 0w-20 here, and I think some Ford engines use this or 5w-20. Some oil makers warn about use in race conditions only. Honda may have a factual basis for preferring 40 weight, in the driving conditions here in the UK, but maybe a visiting tribologist can clarify...

I think that there are plenty of good 5W20 oils on the market. It is pretty obvious that the Honda Engines like the 5W20 oil, just look at all of the good UOAs that we have seen. Joe
