Ever get stuck with counterfeit money?

Wasn't it George Carlin that said to get rid of counterfeit money, to put it in the collection plate at a Church?

Since it is Sunday, I couldn't resist.

Seriously, if your landlord presses on this, I'd want some sort of documentation or report that the counterfeit money was indeed received by the bank from your landlord.

How do you know that it was the 50 and 100 that you gave the landlord, that he passed to the bank, that was declared counterfeit. You don't know that it was. And he can't prove it either. I think his story stinks as well. You had TWO fake bills at the same time, that were different demoninatons? What are the odds of that?

I think you're getting scammed for $150 by your landlord. I'd never give the guy cash ever again.

The best suggestion yet. However, in the name of diplomacy I would not imply the landlord is a cheater. Of course, if the money turns out to really be fake, one would either have to bite the bullet and write the money off, or one would have to find a sucker...

Well the money, if indeed detected as counterfeit, is gone ..so finding someone else to pass it to is no longer an option. The only thing that can be determined is if the landlord did indeed have counterfeit bills intercepted ..and that he can assuredly determine that the OP gave them to him. At that point it's still debatable if the OP is liable for compensating the landlord for his loss. By the implications of the rhetorical stance of the US Treasury and the Secret Service (and the RCMP for you Canadians) ...the last one holding the hot potato eats the loss. There was no suggestion of an upstream traceable recovery pathway.

I'm not saying that there isn't one ..but it's not bold and apparent.

Well, in this particular case it's too late because the bank seized the duds (which should be easily verifiable). In other cases, a swap may be possible.

To the OP: sounds like a mess, the only real advice I can offer is: in the future, *Never* pay rent with ca$h. A check is its own receipt, very handy that way.

Now about this:

Good point, and reminds me of: About 20 yrs ago, my brother & I had some old B&W movie(late 1940's I think) playing on TV, waiting for a football game to start on another channel(we both detest the lengthy verbose "hey look at me" pregame shows). The movie was about some kindly old man who was a counterfeiter, but only did $1 bills, & no more than he needed. Some cab driver got stuck with a bill, lost it to the Treasury agent on the case- and as the agent left with the bad $1 bill, the cabbie called out,"Hey, what about my buck?"

We both laughed about that all through the football game.
