Hey guys,

I have a 1995 Pontiac Sunfire with the OHV 2.2L dinosaur of a motor. It has 260,000KM on it and has seen synthetic most of its life. It doesn't leak or burn any oil and I have been running 0w-40 Esso XD3 in it for a year now.

It's getting to wintertime and I just want to confirm that this is a good oil for my application? I am located in Calgary, AB where we see normal winter temps in teh morning of -20 to -30. Is the 0w-40 a good all year oil, with its high range of viscosities?

Thanks!

A 0W-40 synthetic oil will not have any problems in -30C and is a good all year oil.
If your doing lots of short trips < 10km (engine never up to operating temperature) you could probably go down to a 0w30 or even 0W-20 in the cold season..

I think that this is one of the best all around all season oils available in Canada, and would have no concern about your application. I have run it year round in 4 cylinder engines from the 1980s in Toronto weather. It currently is the oil in my Porsche.

I don't think the GM 2.2 demands a thin oil, but if you did have concerns there is a 0w30 Esso XD-3 also.

BTW what does GM call the "OHV 2.2L dinosaur of a motor"? Maybe the "non-ECO non-TEC"?

I would go with the XD-3 0w-30. It's a heavy 30wt as NJC said. You can get it for around $4/L at the esso distributor:

Miller Ag Supply
9906 Barlow Tr. SE
Calgary, AB

(403) 279-4451.

Yeah, run the 0w30 XD-3 instead of the forty-weight version. The protection is still top-notch and the vehicle might just run a little easier...

John.

So I decided to go with about 3L of Canadian Tire's Formula 1 100% Synthetic - It's rebranded Shell synth. I went with 5w30.

I then added another 1.5L of 0w30 XD3.

Whats your guys' opinion on this combo?

Thanks!

I am given to understand that it is a full PAO synthetic oil for a cheap price point. It is good stuff.

John.

So full PAO with no GrpIII at all? Just like GC?

Go to the U.O.A forums and search for XD-3...it's Imperial oil's (Mobil/Exxon oil owns most of Imperial oil anywho) primo stuff...

I think I've looked at every XD-3 thread on here, but it's still not that clear to me. I know it starts out with a high TBN and a ton of Calcium, but is it mostly PAO like GC, does it have some Grp.III in it, etc.
