Engine sludged running Mobil-1 since new!

Wouldn't true sludging and gelling be two different things?

Or is gelling the start of sludge formation?

Which M1 oil grades are you using in the Blazer and Saab? 5w30?

The Blazer has been using 5w30 as per Owner's Manual.

I typically ran 5W/40 TDT&SUV in my 9-5. I switched this car to Elf/Total 5W/40 over a year ago.

Radiator was full, but like I said, the coolant recovery bottle was low.

Oil sample will be sent out tomorrow. I should know by next weekend if it shows high water content, high anti-freeze content, or anything out of reasonable limits.

If the radiator was full and the recovery bottle was low its leaking coolant somewhere. In this case it could be an intake gasket and its mixing with the oil causing the sludge as others mentioned.

Best advice overall from posters above overall was to change oil before storage, then actually drive once in a while to keep things moving (30 mins or full warm-up), or just charge the battery some to keep it up. Keep the oil changed more frequently with some less expensive oil until you can get the coolant leak checked out and repaired, if needed.

I stored a car outdoors for 1.5 years and never started it once. I charged the battery every 3 months, and had put gas stabilizer in the tank. It started up easily on the first try, in summer.

Well,It ain't the oil!!! I always get the oil hot, take my oil and filter to my dealer and let them change it hot for $15. If you are changing the oil hot, then shorten the oci.

Mos likely coolant in the iol.
ATF is an old and lame way to flush an engine. It has no extra beneficial or magical properties. It is thin.

I got an e-mail and telephone call from Blackstone Labs yesterday following their analysis of the oil from my son's 2001 Blazer.

Coolant in the oil.

The scariest part of their message and analysis is the high copper and lead content indicating bearing wear in the bottom end. I have done most of the oil changes on this engine and never saw indication of oil jelling before. I also haven't noticed any unusually high coolant use in this vehicle either, top it off once a year or so but that was about it.

The car is going into the Dealer tonight so it will be in running condition when he returns from overseas in 1-1/2 weeks. Hopefully the bearings have substantial life remaining.

I wouldn't worry about the bearings too much, if the oil didn't visually show any contamination and the engine was running fine you should be alright once the leak is fixed.

I have had several vehicles end up with coolant in the oil that were repaired and put back into service for many years.

sound like the lower intake manifold gasket. thread here. while its open if it hasn't been up graded to the new MPFI injectors instead of the popetts I recommend going for it.
