Not a clue why. It has been seen before by others but it is very rare evidently.

The way the plunger fits in the bore means even a tiny bit of debris could jam it.

Well at least it was caught in time

Yep, very pleased with a cheap fix and a fresh motor ready and waiting.

I think this may be another of those anecdotal stories you'll hear because this motor had a sump full of Amsoil when it died. I really believe any good synth gives a bit more protection when things go wrong!

LOL! Nothing wrong with that

I have my own anecdotes regarding synthetics (Mobil 1 and Amsoil) and them keeping engines clean as you well know.

What grade/tag was the lube? ASL?

This would happen every now and again with Cadillac's Northstar engines. A GM powertrain engineer said that you can sometimes put 12 quarts or so of oil into it, so freeboard oil gets up into the oil pump areas, and sometimes that would float any debris out of the plunger. Then drain the oil out and re-fill to the proper level. Sometimes that would save an engine rebuild.

I don't know if the Vortec V-8s are designed the same way.
