Engine noise with different oils?

you guy's must have have engine problems then,i've been using
M1 for 15 years in all my GM stuff and my engines aren't any
louder then anybody else's i hear, and some GM v6 are known for
some noise,0w30 in the pan now is as quit as my 10w30HM
i've ran,mileage seems a tad better wit the 0..$.02

Synthetic oils have been noisier in all of my vehicles & motorcycle versus dino. Nature of the beast IMO. However, PP seems to be noisy the first 2-3 OCI's then quiet down nicely. This has been apparent in 2 Toyota V-6 engines, 1 Honda 4cyl and my GMC. I don't really understand why when converting from one oil to another you get noise then is seems to subside.

I've used many many different brands and never noticed a difference in engine noise. In some engines with some oils I'm sure it's possible but most of it is psychological and due to fresh oil being put in the engine IMO.

Buster, did you do a UOA on the SSO that came out of your car? If you did, I think yours would be the longest run of this oil we would have on this board - OH went about 7,700 miles on SSO in his Sunfire...

No I didn't take a sample. If oil consumption would have leveled off, I would have stuck with it and sampled. I dont' see the point of adding such expensive oil on a continual basis so rather then buy more of it, I went with M1. 5qt Jug @ Walmart for $22. That I will sample. I never sent off the 0w20 sample either I still have around somewhere with 10k miles on it.

Same here, I haven't noticed any difference in engine noise between oils. I've used Valvoline, Havoline and Amsoil (All 5w30) in my car, all have sounded the same, and I pay close attention to any noises my car makes. I like to be proactive about maintenance as much as possible.

Fair enough, but I'm suprised you went with 5w30 - that is usually the most 'maligned' M1 grade on this site - the 0W-20 or 5W-20 is much more highly regarded...unless the 5w30 is a lot cheaper....

I Agree. They were out of M1 EP 5w20 and 0w20 which I wanted to try so I just grabbed the 5w30. I believe most of the M1 grades are fairly similar in performance using the same technology overall with minor differences. I'll most likely switch over to the 0w20/30 in the winter. I do like the convenience of being able to obtain M1 at Target or Walmart.

At least that much if not more. I didn't change the filter so there might be a tad bit of SSO in the mix but I added 4.5 qts of new M1 5w30 last night. I have the fumoto so draining the oil is no biggie.

Actually the density is only .80 vs .86 for the EP. My car hasn't noticed. Still very smooth and quiet. Never understood the noise complaints with synthetic or M1 in particular.

Well i just proved myself wrong...i dont think it was because of Mobil One but maybe using a Toyota filter. The 0W30 and Mobil oil filter make a great combo as far as noise is concerned.

yep thats what i use UPF52's and M1.

hey buster what filter you running that your not changing out?

All the EP oils have a higher density of .86

M1 0w20 is .85
M1 5w20 is .80
M1 5w30 is .80
M1 5w30 EP is .86

I have a puralator filter on. Honda calls for filter changes with normal filters every 20k miles so I kept mine on.

SSO is by far the quietest oil in the Volvo over 12 years of ownership. I've tried a few oils since I bought it....from Delo 15w40, Amsoil 15w40, 10W-40, 5W-40, 5w30, 10w30, SAE 30.....despite my threat, I will change the oil in November. Just because I want to try DEO in the beast.

While I agree that different oils have or can have a distinct effect on what we hear comeing from the engine I donot see it as a wear issue. Maybe I should say less noise does not atuomaticly mean less wear and tear. If that where the case we could all just run 25W70 and cal it a day. So I do not worry about it if the engine makes a bit more noise. For me the noiest stuff I have ever ran was Castrol Syntec and Syntec Blend. It made the M1R that came out of the engine sound like lead deading pannels buy comparison.

They are PDF's, I'd make sure your version of Adobe Reader is current.
