Engine noise with different oils?

I've used so many different brands of oil and I really never noticed too much of a difference, if any, between them in terms of engine smoothness/noise etc.

I'm now trying M1 0w-20 and my car seems to love this oil, but I don't think it's the oil. Temps have been in the 20's-30's and I believe that has more to do with it. I also think gas quality varies from tank to tank.

So I'm curious if certain oils to really make any noticeable difference? In the cars I have owned, I really can't say they have. I think we "want" to think some oils are making a difference and convince ourselves that they are. But are they?

I'm running that 0W20 M1 (I got it for free with an M1 filter) in my Hyundai AccentGT. It's SO LOUD ("How loud was it?"), I have to use earplugs and my firing range hearing protectors when I start the car.

Awful, noisy stuff that Mobil1. I don't know how people tolerate it. I must get it out of my car, and soon, before my hearing is ruined for life..

Worst case is when it gets unusually noisy, then really quiet.

I never heard any difference until I purchased my Colorado 4X4. But keep in mind, this was only the 2nd vehicle where I began it's three month old life on synthetic oils. I don't get ticks and clatter from Amsoil ASL or Mobil-1 -- what I hear is the engine from further distances than when using other brands.

Much like having the same hyper/hyper barking pet dogs (smooth Fox Terriers) in the same house for almost 40 years - then hearing the differences in their bark volume levels two blocks away - in my daily walks covering the past almost 40 years.

It's hard to explain - but just recently my Colorado got louder again - when I switched from Quaker State to Amsoil. A couple years ago, the Colorado became quieter when I switched from Mobil-1 to the QS.

I'm not sure if it's a Group IV thing - or because supposedly - Amsoil and Mobil base oil is the same. I dunno.... all I do know is my next purchase will be either Red Line or Schaeffers 7000. I am also considering Amsoil XLM.

dude, you opinion is DQ'ed because you have permanent hearing loss.

I think most of it is psychological. That is my opinion.

I think you may be able to detect a slight difference when changing oil, but the difference may be more because you have new fresh unsheared oil rather than another brand, weight, etc... Differences in flow characteristics of different oil filters may also have a possible effect on noise.

Having said that, at idle with the engine warm 20w50 may make the engine quieter, but that does not necessarily make it the best choice.

I never heard any difference in engine noise between Mobil 1 and other oils. Just seems like a popular saying on this board.

i never use more then 1 brand of oil on my cars so i cant say if one oil makes more noise. but ill be switcing from Pennzoil 5-30 to wallmart super tech 20-50 soon and i will chek it out lol . yah i know its an unfair conparasin

There's another opinion on this board that it depends on the vehicle quality sound engineering that surrounds the engine - and engine type/design -- besides the opinions that I have stated.

I think that if any human were able to use a professional sound room, and hear the same EXACT sound in there, created by a fancy $1 million computer, with about like 25 different sound gages, meters and such proving that that sound can be repeated perfectly thousands of times, if one could set this all up, any human will hear that same exact sounds countless times and there will be days when the sounds will be "different", "more louder", "less louder".....in other words, none of us really have the means to really ascertain if one oil makes our cars sound quieter or louder then another....the evidence we "hears" is anecdotal at best, and frankly is most often just in our minds....that's my 8 cents on this topic. ;-)

Amen. Well put. This topic is right up there with the "butt dynos" and the "my engine revs higher with X brand of oil" coments.

Over the course of 8,000 miles, I had noticed no difference in oil consumption with SSO 0w30. Last night I drained it out and put in Mobil 1 5w30. The engine is just as smooth and quiet as all the previous oils I've used. In fact, it maybe a bit smoother, mostly because it's NEW oil and nothing else.

M1 did the same thing in my Civic engine.
