I'm looking for a good degreaser/all around cleaner to use straight and diluted. I have simple green and like it, but I don't like the alunium corrosion thing. I want something I can use on my engine and wheels that works. Anyone have any recomendations?

Could you elaborate on the aluminum corrosion thing? I ask because I have a bottle of Simple Green that I was planning on degreasing my entire engine bay with when I got the chance.

I have a couple friends that have used it with great results, which is why I bought the stuff.

Now you have me worried! Do you just need to be especially careful at rinsing off the Simple Green?

Simple Green will corrode bare aluminum. It makes it look bad, although it works great as a degrease and general cleaner.

You only have to worry about Simple Green on polished or machine finished aluminum surfaces. It will etch the surface, making it look bad. If there's some aluminum in the engine compartment, but appearance doesn't matter, go ahead and use it.

FWIW, I would suggest you not use Purple Power APC. I bought some this weekend and used in my van. It did not clean well at all, even in areas I washed by hand. I've used various brands of citris engine cleaner b4 and have been very happy with the results. But I kept reading posts where folks mentioned PP, so I tried it. Not on an engine again.

That's strange; I use it on my GTI engine, & it always cuts right through any greasy/oily residue. Different strokes for differnet folks I guess.

No. Once it's washed off, it'll do no damage. The only thing that will happen is that any machine finished or polished aluminum surfaces will look a little rough. If there's a bunch of aluminum, but you don't care about how any of it looks, go for it. Just rinse thoroughly.

You can always use a non-acid wheel cleaner that says "clearcoat safe." It's the acid you want to avoid when dealing with bare aluminum surfaces.

I don't know about simple green aluminum thing. I use it on my camaro which has an all aluminum motor. The front part of the block and heads are not finished but machine to a fairly smooth and shiny surface. Never had a problem, maybe it has to do with the type of aluminum?
I've also used it on torque-thrust aluminum wheels, they were badly neglected to begin with but I didn't notice any corrosion or etching happening with them when using simple green either.

forgot to say,
you could always use a soap and water for engine bay cleaning like car wash soap. Or go with stronger stuff like dishwashing or laundry soap but be aware if it gets on the outside of the car it'll most likely remove any wax.
