Edge/Mobil 1

I drive a 2007 Honda Ridgeline usually on short (10 mile) trips, but occasionally (every two months) take an hour trip somewhere, and a 1998 Trans Am, which usually sees trips of less than 10 miles. I try not to hot rod either very much.

I also asked the guys at Mobil if the extended performance Mobil 1 would prevent wear better than straight Mobil 1. He said that, at my change intervals, I may as well just stay with straight Mobil 1. I keep my intervals at 2000 miles, even though I'm sure you'll all think I'm crazy for that reason, among others.

:)

I guess I'd want to get something off the counter, rather than having to order it, but I'd probably pay $10/quart and $20/filter for something that would absolutely minimize my engine wear. What filter do you guys like? I settled on Mobil 1's after going through the oil-filter-test information on this one guy's site.

If Mobil was honest, they would have said 2 things;

1. Any oil @ 2000 mile OCI is a WASTE.

2. Their Mobil 5000 is a better oil for a short OCI *if* you have to change it so often.

You REALLY have fallen for the Hype.

Mobil 5000 (Or any other SM rated oil) will reduce wear just as well as Mobil 1 in your engine.

Bill is right. Any SM oil will do just fine. Synthetics are for extreme temperatures generally speaking.

Mobil never got into the lame advertising most oil companies spew. It's one of the most successful brands I can think of. Reputation is rock solid. They take a more professional approach IMO. No gimmicks. I prefer their marketing approach over their competitors.

Mobil conventional oils are underrated too. They get overshadowed by M1.

I don't remember that one...

But I do remember an old, old Castrol SYNTEC commercial where they had a car on a race track with only one quart of syn oil in it. But that must have been in the 80s or early 90s...

Being honest is not the same thing as being on a mission.

Mobil's recommendation was plenty honest. He asked between M1 and M1 EP, and they recommended M1. Refusing to steer him toward a third option isn't dishonest, it's just expedient. If they tried that with every such inquiry they received, they would confuse and alienate a lot of people.

As much as I dislike Mobil for the way they handled questions my brother and I asked when the Ashland Mobil war started. I have to hand it to them the way they answered this 2000 mile Mobil 1 vs. Mobil 1 EP question. When someone asks a specific question just answer the question as it was asked, which they did.

If the question was presented in a different way, such as: I like to change my oil every 2000 miles because__________. Which Mobil product do you think is best? They could then make a specific product recommendation, and perhaps be honest and say: Use Mobil 5000, you'd never see a difference in such a short OCI. JMO
