Stopped in at an AutoZone near my parent's today and noticed 2 different sized boxes of STP filters for my Dakota (S16). One box looks like it was almost cut apart by the stocker, but aside from that it seemed a little shorter than its counterpart on the shelf.

I pulled it out of the box and sure enough, I can see the plastic cage inside the filter.

I wonder how long before my beloved 3387A's are assimilated.....

I actually like the engineering behind the e-cores. Reports of used early models is not encouraging, though. I used one on my Taurus (SuperTech) for 1500 miles doing an AutoRx cleaning, and cut it apart. It was well constructed. The ends were solidly attached to the filter media. The media ends were well glued. No physical defects found. The valve was centered and no defects were noted.

I hope that Champion has sorted these teething problems out. The filter has a lot of potential.

The oversize S8/ST8 is an ecore now and probably half an inch shorter than before. If you have the 3.9 or 318 and somewhat limited clearance, and have blown off the ST8 as too long, maybe give it a second look.

The Dodge 2.5 (up to 96) has gobs o' space and would fit even an old school S8. Don't know about the AMC.

Thanks, I'll keep that in mind if I ever run out my current stash and have to buy more for the Dakota. I always thought that the x16 filter was somewhat small compared to what I'm used to seeing, and seeing the Ecore S16 today even smaller yet threw me a little.

Last count I think I had 20 filters. By the time I work through those, I think that Champion will have worked out whatever is ailing them now.

Of course, by then they could be bringing out their Ecore replacement and the fun will start all over again.....

Strange we are seeing such big differences from one post to the next. My stress level will staylow as long as my Wally's has the non ecore, non clicker ST 3950 in stock.

It will only spread to my vehicles when Champion improves them to the demands of oil filter names like AC Delco... who hopefully will have stricter/better composition standards than Wally World does with their new Ecore Super-Techs.

The used ST 3950's I have cut apart looked the same as the much more expensive Purolators and the highly regarded Hastings. I admit my tape measure doesn't do media quality checks.

I've already seen AC Delco ecores at Autozone, e.g. pf1218...

3387s seem to be a hold out. Hmmm, the 1218 equivelent E-cores I've seen don't have the inner ring of holes, making the bypass valve non-functional. I hope they apply this to all GM e-cores, then they will probably be fine.
