Just drove from Stafford, Virginia to BWI and back in our new to me 2011 Ford E350 Super Duty 15 passenger van. We got 18.5 mpg in the mixed local roads, state highways and interstate with all the lively traffic issued inherent to the capital region. The van has a 2 valve 5.4 modular, 4r-75 trans, 3.73 to 1 rear end and the wrong grade of oil in it (5w30 vice 5w-20), dumb dealer service Dept. Four adults and four kids in the van. EPA said 15mpg highway. Whatever....this thing gets almost the same mileage as my V6 F150. I am digging this van! Opinions?

Nice

My dads old 89 B350 Dodge got about 10 MPG. No overdrive and 3.90 ish gears. 360 engine as well. I have an old 92 Dodge D250 truck with I believe 3.90 axle with overdrive that gets about 12 mpg.

I don't have it running real well yet. Sounds like you get pretty good mpg to me......

A 2v engine will operate fine on many grades of oil however its been proven over hundred of millions of miles that a 20 grade will lead to these engines lasting longer than the body around it,and the oil tends to pump faster when cold and s easier to pump when hot.
My 04 hemi ram has 350hp/390+tq and it got nothing but dealer 5w-20 bulk oil changes at 5000 mile intervals and it would shred the tires at will with over 270k on the odo.
That truck has more power density then the op's motor and ran like a dream even with those high miles. So to even think a 20 isn't sufficient is absurd.

Op. use a 5w-20. See if you can get 19.5mpg. Every little bit helps. Unless you will see oil temps above 280f there is no need to go any thicker than ford says.
And try a can of MOS2. It costs 8 bucks or less and will pay for itself in less than a tank of fuel.
Since I added it to my charger I've gained at least 3mpg. Its the gift that just keeps on giving.
Search the member named injured_again
He has been documenting his experiences with mos2. Or search mos2,then sit back and get ready for a ton of info.
I've only read of 1 member who thinks he had a negative experience, most everyone else has seen some form of improvement in fuel economy or running condition

I am planning on 5w-20 motorcraft. Its about the best bang for the buck out there. I will check out the MOS2. I don't see getting much better mileage out of it. I am going to take out the fifth row. Those seats weigh at least 100lbs, and I don't need that much room, although it is nice to have the option. Other than that I am kicking around a flowmaster or a magnaflow straight up muffler replacement, and I still need to finish wiring for trailer/trailer brakes since I tow a 5000lb travel trailer.

My 2001 GMC 1500 van gets around 12 mpg average, 13.5 in all-freeway driving. That's with the V-6 and 4L60E. Looks like I need an E-350.

Try some gears in that Chevy. 4.56-1 is working like a champ in my f150 with the v6. Underpowered=needs more gear.

A magazine(PV&4WD?) got 20 mpg out of a B100 Dodge van with 318 V8 and 4 spd transmission way back in the late 70s.They got like 19.8 out of a similar D100 pickup.

I could be wrong, but I wouldn't think it would have the 4R75W, it would be either the 4R100, 5R110W or 6R140.

The 5R110 replaced the 4R100 in ~2004 in the 'duty, but I'm not sure if things were the same for the vans.

it that hand calculated? the dic can be quite inaccurate at times.

DIC...haven't run a full tank yet. The van had four adults, four kids. No cargo. Very sure its a 4r75. The 110w was an option. I concur that more gear might be better. I was sure hoping it wasn't a 4r75, but it is what it is. After reading a bit about it I am confident it is tough enough for the job.

It's definitely a 4 speed auto. I don't think the 5.4 2V vans ever had a 5 speed auto. I rented one last year to move and it was a 5.4 2V and 4 speed auto.

It, however, got 4 MPG.

We have one at work with the 5.4L 2V and the 4R100 behind it which is why I asked. I was under the impression based on a recent Super Duty discussion we had on here that Ford didn't offer the 4R75W in Super Duty applications.

I bet it drops a bit with stop and go.

Congrads, that is good mpg, and with probably enough space for the whole family. And all your belongings.
