Appears to me a reasonable compromise is to go half way then change to Havoline. I will do a oil analysis at the end of the second OCI and see where the copper is get Terry's comments and establish an oil regimine. I tend to keep a car for 12-15 years and this is my first experience with a Japanese(made in USA) car so just trying to get off to the right start.

Can someone with experience with Havoline let me know if there are sufficient detergents to keep the motor clean ? Thanks.

again... im being a jerk here i'm sure- But i would not do this. But- it's your car so do as you please. I'm sure Havoline has enough detergents in it to keep your engine clean.

I think this is one of the reasons Terry doesn't like his comments disclosed on this board. I did ask him if it was okay to post on the board that he instructed me to drain the oil and he said it was okay. But I can definitely see why you have to be careful with recommendations taken out of context.

No disrespect to texasproud - he is just trying to get some answers.

If you really want a serious defacto answer to your question, it's going to cost you a UOA and a Terry Dyson interpretation. If you want my honest advice, I would keep it in unless you are willing to do the above. I think my situation was a little unique and I was willing to pay for the information. Even then, Terry Dyson’s analysis is just his opinion

. He has just forgotten more about oil than I will ever hope to learn so I’d be a fool not to listen to him (especially since I paid him money for that opinion).

In the grand scheme of things, however, I think even with the abuse my factory fill oil saw it wouldn't have made a huge difference in wear to leave it in. I mean, most of us here could probably agree that if you follow the manufacturer’s directions your engine will give you a long service life. Sure, we can do better then everyone else by trying to find that sweet spot using UOA. But for the most part, I believe that your Honda is going to live a long time if you just follow the manufacturer’s directions.

The question is; "how nuts are you?" If you have been bitten by the BITOG as have I, you can rationalize spending $50 on a UOA and Dyson Analysis to lower a few PPMs of copper out of your oil. But if your sanity quotient is higher than mine is, I would not hesitate to leave the factory fill in until the OLM tells you to dump it.

Again, you have to ask yourself why Honda would strongly recommend that you leave that oil in until the OLM tells you to change it. There must be a good reason for it.

I am taking delivery of a new Toyota Corolla in 5 days time. It is my intention to change the ff within the first 1k kms/625 miles 1)to flush the engine internals 2)The car has no doubt been standing around after manufacture for some months. 3) It will have had several starts from cold never getting warmed up. 4)I enjoy doing it and it will make me feel better. I will use Castrol Edge 5w30 or Mobil 1 10w30, havent decided yet, and then change again at 5k kms/3125 miles then follow 5kms changes as per Toyota severe service shedule using one of the said oils. I will keep this car for a long time. My other car is a Toyota Kluger/Highlander which has had a similar start to its life and is now on 34k kms/21.5k miles with no troubles and very clean engine, no measurable consumption.

Mobil 1 is only available in 0W-40, 10w30, 15w40 and 5W-50 in Australia.
At 625 miles I think it will flush any nasties out of the engine, and of course bear in mind it is old oil in there in the first place. As an aside, when I lived in UK I was friendly with an employee of a major Japanese car manufacturer and he told me that once a whole batch of their cars was filled with incorrect type engine oil, and the error was not corrected.

Mobil and Castrol (helplines) advise to keep in factory fill for 5k kms to run in before changing to synthetic, both recommend 0W-40 for my new Toyota Corolla which is a shame since it is not advised in the handbook and also I have a stash of 25 litres Mobil 1 10w30.
