Dulles Airport when it opened in 1962

You should see it today. Completely built up all around it. Air & Space museum is at the top of pic beyond the runways. The only parking is in front of the terminal.

Yep, it was out in the middle of nowhere when it was built. For those who enjoy this kind of thing and know the area, this is a fun resource:

Choose the layers button and remove anything except the current year and another year of your choice. Dulles property is in the top left hand corner and is split between Fairfax and Loudoun counties so you only see a part of it, but you easily see how the area grew up around it.

I've only passed through IAD once, but did enjoy the main terminal (one of Saarinen's projects), and the mobile lounge experience.

I tried it out. It was hard to get working but All of the land all around there was farmland.
