I popped on a Fram TG and filled my car with a $10 Havoline jug just to have it spray out all over the road and engine bay when I started.

I took the filter back off to notice the gasket was gone...found it still in the box. Whoops.

Hmmm.....another argument for lubricating the filter gasket before installation?

True but then stuff happens to all of us. Yet, just another reason for pre-filling a filter. Odds it would have been caught then.

On a Honda, there is also the need to ensure that the old gasket comes off with the old filter. I have had the old gasket stick to the base a couple of times with our various Hondas, and I never use anything more than my hand to tighten an oil filter.

I've seen em' missing 3-4 times using my NAPA Golds. I always catch it - when I go to pre-oil the gasket. I had the same experience as you - in regards to a puddle underneath the vehicle. I still love the NAPA Gold filters - but I always check first now. My puddle came as a result of the gasket falling off while installing the filter. Some of the NAPA Gold gaskets that stay on, are too easily removed. Only negative comment I have about those filters.

Actually, that applies to every vehicle with a spin on filter. Every vehicle has that happen at one time or another.

For sure. When I was a kid working in auto parts stores (real ones) I used to always open the box and check to make sure there was a gasket present before handing it to a customer. I would come across 3 or 4 filters a year that were missing the gasket.

I still do this before I drop a filter into my shopping cart.

BTW, anyone know who used to make the Big "A" brand of filters?

Lesson learned. Still, I like the TG filter. I got a boatload of Puralators on freebate form PepBoys. After I use up the odd ones I have, it'll be PP for about the next 20 changes.

I screwed one on once with the old gasket in place, so the filter was double gasketed with the new ring and old ring, just as dumb. Blew oil everywhere. I now always check the old oil filter to make sure the gasket is on it.

What is this big "A"?...that you question us about...

Big A Auto Parts stores used to be everywhere. Very similar to NAPA stores.

Big A branded suspension and engine parts were made by TRW. Can't recall what other lines their branded parts were. I want to say their filters were Purolator, but I can't recall for sure.
