Dual exhaust: Does it still mean power and speed?

A V6 or small V8 I don't think needs the extra pipes. Actually hurts the low end power because of less exhaust velocity and extraction effect.

My car came factory with as many like to say "true" dual exhaust. Gotta love the sound of an american V8. BTW flowmasters suck

I am curious, do you mean that you personally enjoy the sound of your vehicle's V8 engine or do you mean that everyone that has to listen to it enjoys the sound of it?

Both

Cars years ago needed duals to be able to flow more exhaust. With higher gas mileage cars of today it isn't needed as much since the amount of exhaust that a car generates is directly related to the amount of gas burned. And as already mentioned, most of todays are simply dual tipped.

I did a hot rod engine swap on a friend's camaro. The headers feed into a large Y pipe, then into a three inch cat, then a single 3" pipe over the rear axle where it goes into a tranverse muffler and exits the car as duals. Originally, I didn't think it would flow enough, but it's plenty. On the other hand, I'll be restoring a 68 Plymouth roadrunner that's got a 496" big block and dual 3" with an X pipe. Just wouldn't be right any other way.

I bet those ricers I see running around with a 5 inch ---- can on the end of their tail pipe gains about 30HP.
And the stickers on the window is good for another 50HP

For sale, 1988 Chevy pickup, new breaks!

(I just won't tell you where the breaks are...)

Lots of motorcyclists that dyno their bikes report better performance when they replace their duals with a 2 into 1 pipe, especially if there is a crossover-scavenger connection. Duals are usually for looks.

Let me alter my original question slightly:

With everything else in the engine and transmission being equal and unchanged, would an extra exhaust (not just a tail pipe, but a full, separate exhaust from manifold to a separate cat to muffler to tip) provide any extra power?

It all depends on the application. As others have said, with most of today's cars, the answer is no, and in fact it can actually kill low end torque. There are lots of factors, engine displacement, target RPM, then size of the pipes, obstructions, etc. But unless you're dealing with a large V8, I really don't think there is any point, other than sound.

Way back when, IIRC, true dual exhaust helped some at top end/higher revs.
Single(if well designed) helped more at bottom end(torque).
Now adays, who knows?

Your engine is nothing more or less than an air pump. The quicker you get rid of the old air, the quicker you get fresher air in... its just that simple.

BTW there is no such thing as loosing/killing the low end tq when you go to larger exhaust. Simply moved up in the powerband. Still there

I'd agree on pretty much anything other than a v8/larger it's not needed. One larger pipe can make just as much power as two smaller pipes. It's all about space available, etc.

On my car it would make no sense to run a y into a single, when there's not a lot of room to do so. A lot easier to run each pipe back, and so forth.

on your typical F-body (camaro) where you have a torque arm in the way, it's much easier to run into a large single to the back.

Like I said plus it sounds good

(I made this video last fall)

1 5/8" D-port Primaries into 2" secondaries finally into 2.5" Finals. Standard Try-y header design. All 2.5" Mandrel Bent Tubing. X-pipe crossover. Dumped under the rear axle. Sounds good for an old person car

My Acura CL has dual tips with an ugly split at the 'rear axle' that you can see from behind, but I think I'd rather go without the extra 90* bends and extra weight of two mufflers. Just another marketing decision aimed at the boy racers.

Old Coot concurs.

Shanty should be safe from intruding NOISE!!!!!!!!

Go out in the country and thrill the critters with unwanted (by Coot) sound.

Noise pollution HAS been shown to negatively affect the quality of life.
