How long has the current Ford SuperDuty model been in production? Does the supply exceed demand at this point?

One thing to keep in mind is that the new Tundra has just been introduced this month. On brand new redesigns any dealer is going to try to obtain MSRP or above. How quickly the price goes down will depend on the demand for the product. The redesigned Tundra is supposed to be Toyota's biggest product launch in the entire history of the company. Combine that with fact the dealers just started selling it this month, I would say now would not be a good time to go deal shopping on a new Tundra.

Are you serious? I have a hard time believing that you paid $17,900 for a new 2006 F250 4X4 and V8 engine. That's almost $10,000 less than they are asking for a new one now according to the pricing at Edmunds.com.

You can still get new 06s for that or less with an employee discount. My truck is a stripper just the way I wanted it V8, 4x4, 8foot bed, solid Axle DANA 60 front and rear w 3.73 lockers, Bullet proof ZF 6 speed transmission (same transmission and clutch as the F-550) hose out rubber flooring, roll down windows and no extra electronics to screw up. 35" BFGs fit stock and I added the factory upfitter switches myself which give you 2 30 amp relays and 2 10 amp relays. Installed a nice set of federal strobes last week and this thing is a snow plowing money making machine. It lives up to the name SuperDuty. I love this truck and Im a Chevy guy.

You're very welcome. I really like this engine much more than the previous generation 3.4 V-6. It's easier to service the oil changes can be done from above with the oil filter on top and a sump pump, and the power is more than adequate for a Tacoma, FJ or 4 runner. I am skeptical about it in the new Tundra though(sure it is adequate but really what's the point besides initial cost?) I would drop the extra premium $ for the more effecient and powerful 5.7 V8 for the Tundra.

In appropriate sized vehicles like the 4 runner(wife drives 15-30 miles a trip several times a day) I am getting mileage significantly higher than the EPA published highway. While the Tacoma gets the EPA published.

It is indeed a chain.

Are you sure about this? Not saying you are wrong, but the ad in Four Wheeler magazine definitely shows a belt. The ad writers might have made a mistake; The 5.7 is a stroked version of their 4.7, and Toyota literature definitely shows that, up to 2006, that engine has a belt. The 5.7 was made by stroking the 4.7 to 4.02 inches, retaining the same bore. They might have updated the 5.7 to utilize a chain, but their cutaway says otherwise. This belt/chain question is important to me, because, in the past, I have had two timing belt failures. One was in my 1986 Ford Ranger four cylinder, which was not an interference engine, and repair at the Ford dealer came to $220 counting the tow. The other was in my son's Ford Escort, which had an interference engine and had to have a rebuilt head, and was very expensive.

The 5.7 uses the same bore diameter but an entirely diferent block. The 4.7 is an iron block aluminum head converted to truck use from a Lexus design while the 5.7 is all aluminum new engine family designed specifically for this truck. The diagram you are refering to is more like the 4.7. I saw the same diagram in this weeks Time magazine. Either it makes it simplifies the diagram or marketing made a mistake.

"454, this is a half ton truck and is rated for that. When Toyota has 3/4 and 1 tons on the market those will be valid questions."

The Toyota site states that the V8 engined Tundras are good for towing either about 8k lbs or 10k lbs, so 454's question is a valid one. Not only how does it do, but how does it hold up when doing so.

John's initial comments about the Titan breaking axles confirms other complaints that I've heard about the truck. Short of finding some chronic problem, Toyota seems to be the first Japanese company to have finally figured out what a full sized truck should be like.

OK, I believe you. You seem to be very knowledgable about Toyota engines, and what you said about the 4 liter v-6 is corroborated by the diagram I saw which definitely showed a chain.

Whats stands out in my mind is how much better the tundra did in terms of acceleration, brakeing handleing, towing etc..... I was able to point the tundra where I wanted it to go then use trail brakeing and power to steer the truck.

With regards to the Chevy, how much of that percieved 'slowness' in acceleration is due to the annoying torque management? (feels like a slug out of the hole due to the computer trying to be gentle on the drivetrain).

Silverado 4.8L 16/20
Silverado 5.3L 16/22 (16/21 for E85 model running on regular gasoline)
Silverado 6.0L 15/19

Those numbers are so close to be insignificant. Cylinder deactivation definately does the trick for helping out on the highway. And as I see it, just shows you how underpowered the small engines are in a fullsize if they are not providing any mpg improovement. And no, I don't call 1 or 2mpg an improovement. =-) Working too hard to keep up with the pace, killing fuel ecomony in the process.

If I recall my time frames correctly, Ford was offering an unbelievable combined discount around that time. If I remember right, a brand new ford crown vic came in at around 9k with whatever the incentive was at the time. So yes, timing and knowledge of the incentives could have put you in a brand new ford for the price of a used vehicle.

Well, I used Autotrader.com and did a search for "new" 2006 F250 4x4s, and the cheapest that I could find within a 300 mile radius was well over $30,000. I did see a few 2x4s that started in the mid $20Ks. These probably aren't stripped-down models either.

I realize that this does not represent the negotiated price, but Internet pricing is usually fairly aggressive. I doubt whether I would be able to negotiate a $17,000 discount.

Quirk Ford in branitree ma has an 06 F-250 4x4 v8 auto listed for 21,900 right now in todays boston globe and it includes a $4000 fisher plow.

I just got up and haven`t had a chance to see the papers yet to confirm but doesn`t the small print include cash or trade as part of that price? Quirk has been doing that lately(Chevy blazer for 16.9,but 4000 cash or trade), they are still the cheapest around,at least as far as advertised price.

I checked their website, and this is what they show for F250s. They only show the MSRP. If Ford dealers are selling $30k+ vehicles for under $20K, they must really be hurting.

Well finally got the paper
coffeetime.gif
. It shows the truck for $21,999,so really $22,000. But this price includes $1000 for a commercial rebate and $3000 for an owner loyalty rebate. It would be $26,000 for most people I would think.

In my area it is common to see the Ford, Chevy and Dodge dealers selling trucks for 10k off sticker (Loss leader). Toyota does not usually have to do that to keep their sales #'s up. As far as #1 selling truck, you do know that includes government sales. The federal gov't alone is a HUGE buyer of domestic cars. Throw in the sweet programs that the rental car companies give as well. Very rare to see an import rental..As far as "real" trucks, remember this is a 1/2 ton. How silly to compare it to a F250 or Dodge Cummins. If the new Tundra has the same Toyota reliability look for Ford, Chevy and Dodge to improve as well. The consumer benefits..Now put that new V8 in my 06 Double cab and I'll be a happy camper..Until a 3/4 ton diesel Tundra comes out....

#@$%! on import rentals. I rent a car every week (I travel for a living) and there are a ton of Camry's among other import cars for rent.

The local Lincoln Mercury dealer had a brand new loaded Navigator with almost 19k off MSRP a few weeks ago, including some sort of rebate. It seems that Ford is trying to unload a huge inventory.IMO its only a matter of time before we see some 3/4 and 1 ton trucks from Toyota and with that super V8 and drive train i think the demise of the U.S. manufactures dominance in this market sector is only a short time away.
