Hi.

Looking for comments/input on when to drain the factory fill on my 2014 Chevrolet Volt that we purchased new in June 2014. The OLM is at 18% with 30,000 miles (48,500KM) on the odometer. Of those miles we have done 22,400 EV miles (36,000KM), or about 74% electric.

I'll make it well into the spring before getting close to zero on the OLM. What say ye on doing the drain? Run it to zero on the OLM? Drain it now?

Don't drain all your voltages out. Having said that now won't hurt and doubt waiting till nicer weather would either

7000 miles and 1.5 years on the oil is plenty. Change it.

Possibly not applicable to your car, but GM balancer chains were wearing out rapidly due to excessively long oil change intervals. Modern GM engines don't seem to appreciate this.

And, what if you need to drive across the country. Your oil is used up.

Sounds like you have not read the owner's manual?

Son in law has one, I believe the manual on his states every two years, not sure if there is a mileage mark like two years and X miles whichever comes first. 30,00o miles on a 2014 is a lot of driving, hard to believe so much was pure electric as the full charge only goes 35 or 50 miles before the gas kicks in to recharge.

Anyway, what does the manual say for your year as to OCI?

I'd just do whatever the manual says, it probably calls for a change either once a year or every two years.

7,100 miles on a modern synthetic isn't much, especially on that motor which runs more like a generator than a car engine. I bet the UOA would come back perfect.

So 7,600 miles and and 19 months on the factory fill.

He is at 18% on the OLM..so he is good, i would of changed early but nothing wrong with following the manual. Depends where you are and what weather is like. Otherwise just wait til spring.

why you would feelthe urge to change the oil in the middle of dark winter especially in frozen canada is beyond me.
But hey if you're paying someone else to do it, or it's sunny outside and you feel like it, go for it. It's more of a human convenience thing though

I'm in the camp of draining factory fills after a short period of time (1000 miles on a non-hybrid) to drain wear metal particles, and then once more at 2000 miles before beginning normal OCIs.

Factory Fill should always come out as soon as you get home with your new vehicle. Irrespective of manufacturer, get that FF out of there ASAP!

The next 2 or 3 OCIs should be < 1000 miles, after that go with your normal schedule.

I have a heated garage for a reason. I couldn't do without it.
